Redemption

After working on this piece for over a week, I've finally finished it. It's intended as an imporrtant boss battle theme after a main character has just been killed. I am somewhat proud of this piece, and it may be the best battle theme I've written so far. This piece may be a bit too repetitive but oh well, alot of battle themes are just as repetitive if not more so. Anyway, any feedback you guys can offer would be greatly aprpeciated (espically since I've spent nearly three times as much time and energy as I normally do on pieces).

SoundClick song info: Redemption by Guitarplayer52 - I'm not so much a band as just a guy who composes songs intended for videogames.

I like this one. Especially near the beginning. I think you really get across the battle feel with alot of emotion in there which is what you'd expect. After that it does get a bit repetitive and so it loses a bit of that emotion and becomes more "generic boss fight". At 3:40-ish for example I think you could use a question and answer bit in order to break up the repetiveness of that theme. It's good but a tad overused with nothing in between it. 4:25 when the strings come in is very good though I thoroughly enjoyed that.

At just before 5 mins it speeds up and seems a little rushed and repetitive again so it loses sight of that emotion.

A very very good start though and if you could just make it as interesting as some of the points I've highlighted all the way through by adding some variation and maybe another melody it'll be utter class. Nice job.

Not bad at all Nirvana, it has it's moments and sometimes it doesn't

First thing that I noticed was a good sense of drive, it makes for a more tense feeling that comes across well I think. At times it felt a little repetitive, but then again, you have to have at least some repetition in music for it to work.

All in all I think it's well done and well organized

Good job!

I liked it. As RPG music it's pretty awesome. Probably my favorite thing from you.

Pretty good!! Particularly liked when the snare drums came in, and also when the strings came in too. Sound pretty appropriate for a computer game. Not sure about your mix though - I think it sounded too trebly or something on my speakers. Maybe the part which was just switching between 2 different chords was a bit repetitive.

Wow, thank you everyone for the comments. I think this is the most comments I've ever gotten on a piece in a one day period of time. Anyway, thank you all for the listens.

Fox- Yeah, I agree. Some parts are way too repetitious and they are somewhat unintersting to listen to. I tried my best to make the parts as un-repetitive as possible, but I just didn't have it in me. My whole approach to battle themes seems to be putting long chord drones and the occasional melody over an ostinato and that is pretty much what I've done here. While I'm still new to composing and still trying to find my own voice, I think I've established that my music is inherently repetitive.

Will Kirk- Well, I've heard this piece close to 100 times in the past week while working on it, so it's pretty much lost all it's effect on me personally, but I do agree with you. It has its moments where it works well, and moments where it just feels like filler.

Songjun- Thank you. It better damn well be one of the best things I've written, it took me 10 days and about 30 hours to write (which is about 3 times as long as I normally spend on a piece). In fact, the last piece I wrote, "Boss Battle Theme", I wrote in only about three hours.

finrod- Yeah, I agree. The consensus seems to be that this piece is good but too repetitive. As for the mix, yeah, I agree with that as well. I know absolutely nothing about mixing and getting good sound quality out of my pieces.

I have 30 hours at least into my last movement of Invasion and it is only half way done. I think you are really understanding what a lot of effort can produce. Once you get a good sequencer count on another 15-20 hours of getting the mix right. This is what it takes to produce quality music. You can hear the difference when you see someone put up their music and say they did it in under an hour compared to a great piece of work like this one.

We gotta figure out a way for you to get a decent sound library and then the sky's the limit.

BTW I didn't find this to be too repetitive at all. I completely enjoyed this!!!

Have you talked yet with your music teacher??

Get it done!!! He might have some options for you as well.

Ron

Well done. I told you this already, but this is the best battle theme I have heard you make so far. I have to admit I purposely did not post on the last battle theme you posted simply because I knew you didn't really try on that one, but this is an entirely different story. You are right to say you are starting to get a grasp of battle composition now and prehaps getting closer to finding your signature style.

The repetitiveness is apparent, but not discouraging. I try not to be repetitive at all, but I think it works well with your style and I hardly noticed and when I did I didn't really care because it makes sense to me.

You seem to have utilized the idea of sucking a melody dry. Using all the variations you seemed to be able to come up with. I think it is much better to do this then introduce another melody.

I think the percussion and chords are well arranged. It defiantly has the 'Attack' from Final Fantasy X ideal behind it, but it is still original and is it's own in melody. On the slower segments you should consider lowering the volume on the snares though. They are a bit loud for a segment with a low emotional drive. Maybe make them fade in as the drive strengthens and then when they come to the regular drive that you emphasize in this piece bring them back to the intended volume.

Overall, a fine addition to your compositional library. I think you broke a barrier or two. Keep it up!

Damn,I've been too lazy to respond to this thread for awhile. Thank you. I think this is my best and least derivative battle theme so far too. I'm still not sure if I've found my own style but I'm getting closer. Anyway, yeah I agree this is one of my finer pieces and I'm afraid that I won't be able to write anything this good for awhile. For now, I am done with battle themes and you can expect to hear more melodic pieces from me in the future as I've noticed my music has become increasingly ambient over the past few months.

Cool music and a lot of it too. Any chance I can use it in my video games? They are not commercial they will be free and you will get credit.
