Romance for Violin and Orchestra

Hey all,

I started writing this piece 2 years ago, when I was 16. It has lain dormant since that time. Basically everything before 2'00 is about 2 years old! I resurrected the piece today, mainly out of curiosity. It's completely different, and very unlike my current style. Though, I'm sort of glad it has resurfaced. Everything after 2 minutes was today's work (in between revising for an A-Level further maths exam tomorrow!).

It's pretty mid-romantic, and scored for Strings and Wind. I'm debating whether or not to take out the wind, as they don't participate much, but if I do keep them, I'll add more material for them.

Any comments will be gladly appreciated.

I really did love those flowing chords..they really sounded great..now as for the violin part, I thought it was perhaps the most beautiful melody of any solo violin piece on this forum.
The piece in general sounded very tragic and lost almost, like someone is recovering from the death of a loved one. (that's how I imagine it sounds anyway). I especially liked some of those areas of tension that build up in the piece and the resolve that come after them.
As for the winds..I would acually vote to keep them in, I like the timbre they emit..adds more of a mellow feel to this piece. I actually think that you should complete this piece..it seems at the very area that I was saying in my head "yes more.." it just ended abruptly. I would definitely like for you to complete this piece, simply because I think it's way to beautiful to be left unfinished. Hope to hear more Shane,

Romanticist

Hello,
This piece is absolutely beautiful! My god. The flowing chords and spots fo tension. Just a lot of what Roman said. One of my favorite parts was 16-17, such a small part but so beautiful!!! Great work, I really want to hear more.

Welcome to YC by the way,

-scott.

Thank you both for your kind comments!

Romanticist, I don't think anyone has ever said such kind things about my work! thank you. I promise to finish it. I had never really seen the piece as melancholic, but now that you've said it... hmm. Maybe I should think of a more emotive title than the generic 'Romance'

Tenor, haha thank you, it was the only way I could see to smoothly modulate from Cmajor to Aminor. I'm glad it works!

And to think I nearly deleted all of my previous sketches of anything a couple of weeks ago...

very beautiful work here. I agree with you, the winds don't participate much. I would take them out completely and replace their melody with more lower strings. I'm guessing it just ends like that because it's unfinished? lol. If I were you, I'd leave that as the ending and just add the theme from measure 32 on as the ending, and you know, make it really bleed at the end.

Loved it, though! Is this the second movement to a larger work? If not, I'd simply leave it by itself as a small piece for violin and string orchestra. But yeah, definitely bring back that theme at 32...it was gorgeous!

Great Job!

I love it! It pulls you in and keeps you there. It has direction, a wonderful theme, and keeps its original intent throughout the piece. Wunderbar!!
