Scherzo - Saxes and Brass

I think it's a scherzo, at least.
I wrote this over the weekend, and thought it was cute.
It's for sax quartet AND brass quintet. At the same time.
I was inspired by Holst, (and the beginning of Mercury, if you've never heard The Planets, then shame on you.) for the beginning and it kind of wrote itself from there. I repeat stuff a bit often, and the middle section is quite strange, but I think it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Yup.

Very nice, Mitchell. I think you really did a great job on the piece. Unfortunately, I can't see your notation since I don't have your particular notation program. The midi file looks fine as far as range, etc. is concerned. The only odd part was the section in 9/8 in my opinion. The meter obscures the actual 3+2+2+2 that you've got going on, I would think of using another time signature to avoid confusion (that's just me, though).

I liked your interplay between the brass and saxophones. If you don't mind posting a .pdf of the score, I'd be happy to critique that as well.

Bravo!

finale's GPO? =P just wondering.
Although I agree that we shouldn't just rely on the good playback of our program to compose, sometimes i find it really hard to do without constantly listening to it over and over again =n= for finale's version of GPO the lacking of saxophones as well as clarinet in A is really a pain in the neck.

Here's the transposed score. It's a piece of shit.
The 9/8 section is beamed wrong, but it's still 3+2+2+2.

And since the instruments didn't show up on the side. =S
Soprano Sax
Alto
Tenor
Baritone

Trumpet I
II
French Horn
Trombone (Euphonium)
Tuba

You get the general idea, sort of.

Very funny piece, I believe scherzo is fitting. As said before the interplay is good, variation is good, and it has a nice lively feel.

Sounds a bit like a prelude to something larger.

Keep up the good work!

I was impressed by the sense of motion you create in this piece, along with the rhythms and strong harmonic cohesion. Good structure, too.

While the ending is sufficiently humorous, I would have preferred to hear something more dramatic, perhaps a build-up followed by each player finishing simultaneously.

Your score looks OK to me, just watch out for elements crashing into one another.

If you can, try to assemble some live players to get a recording of this - I'm positive they'd enjoy it a lot.

Well done!

Oh yes, VERY enjoyable. I am now going to take this motif and make my own piece, however it will be for chamber. Thanks for the inspiration and idea!
