Song #4, in Bb minor: "Cry to the Multitudes"

Before you move this to the Vocal/Choral section, let me explain the reasons I put it here:

1- The organ is replacing the awful baritone syntethyzer.

2- The bassoon doubles the voice almost constantly.

If these are not enough reasons, feel free to move it to the Vocal/Choral section. ^^

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

FINALLY! After 4 days of work, the latest song in my song cycle, for baritone and orchestra, is complete.

This is almost operatic, as in it is separated between sung and recitativo parts.

The poem is by M_is_D, it suffered very slight modifications:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sung:
Let the masses come
Let them invade my thoughts
Make them realize the truth

Let me show them the light
And reveal my path
To human comprehension

I tell you, multitudes
Pick up your weapons
And strike the scum who talk about love
Butterflies and castles in the air
Strike the laughs off their faces
Replace them with screams of pain
Pain of the body and pain of the heart

Recitativo:
Yes! Yes! You deserve it!
The world will know
How it is like to be me!
By my hand, I will make justice
Even if only within my dream

Sung:
Do I long for art, for music
Or for achievements of great beauty?

No! My greatest wish
Is to be known
Not as a showstopper
But a heart stopper!

The world will feel – for I demand it
The acid spasms of suffering I so well know
And let the screaming women
And let the crying children come
Let them!
Let them!
Let the mis'rable beasts fall while I watch, delighted

Recitativo:
The taunting demon of hope will die under me!
Longings of sunny days and the embrace of lovers
Are Earth’s greatest Satan!
Why, you ask? They are pitiful thoughts
Which arise from fools and only fools affect
And fools must either learn or die
And quite sadly for them
Fools can never learn

Sung:
Let me show them the light
And reveal my path
To human comprehension

I know all the inferiors will gather
To curse and insult me
Beware, beware, beware!
The sadistic flame you light
Might be too strong for my control
And when it sets free
Revenge will be sweeter than sugar
And bloodier than war

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yup, I'm the author and am very proud Berlioz set it to music

I feel that this music is as excellent as the one of Song #3 in C minor, but I don't feel (perhaps from the biased POV I have) that the dramatic setting is as deep. Although it is very good music, it reminds me more of music for a battle in a Science Fiction movie, or a Fantasy movie with demons in it. I absolutely love the orchestral writing, and yet I feel each different section of the text wasn't too contrasting, because it's based on impulses. It does grab one's interest all the way, though; definitely. I just don't feel very deep emotions.

Maybe we just have different views on the same thing, in which case I don't blame you for anything and congratulate you on an excellent job and the honour I got from you working on my poem

MONSTROUS GRAVEDIGGING

For good reasons, I assure you.

One: No one commented on this but M_is_D.
Two: I've just spent ELEVEN HOURS GPOing it, so you BETTER listen!

Here's the GPO recording.

Far from perfect, but I like it. ^^

The score is A MESS. So at least for those who want to follow the poem well (might I remind you the church organ is replacing the voice) there's a PDF with the baritone (or bass, not sure) line and the lyrics at the bottom of this post.

P.S.- Count one more measure from the beginning, since there's an empty one I forgot to remove. Anyway, the "voice" is easily heard starting after the intro (at 00:41, to be more precise).

Isn't it amazing the difference GPO can make? I would suggest putting the link to the GPO version into the original post as well, it sounds so much better.

I am not one to give long a analysis of a piece. But I will tell you I enjoyed this a lot. I see a lot of emotion in this, just not a lot of different emotions. But that is not a bad thing.

I also think you followed the mood of the poem quite well.

Very well done

Ron

How the hell could I miss this?!

I feel suddenly very bad, this piece is absolutely divine! Loved every single bit of it
Very nicely done with the text that Tomás wrote

I say, hear! People listen to this!

Excellent work - I like it rather a lot.
The sentiments in the poem are good, but in one or two spots the words come across a tad naïve. Otherwise good.
Good word-painting. Not too obvious (except for a couple of places), and effective.
Very low in the range for a baritone - perhaps better suited for a bass voice.

In the main theme, the off-beats almost seem to make the music trip over itself a little, and disrupt the rhythmic flow. It works, but it feels a little bit awkward. Maybe the syncopation could be in the violins or something, instead of the percussion etc.

Over-all, I liked the harmony. Very effective major/minor in some areas. One or two little areas could have been improved with better voice-leading, but very good as a whole.
Good orchestration too - very colourful, and evocative (one of the things I would say about the piece as a whole). - Those pulsing string replies are very nice.

Nice - I want to hear more. An evocative piece, which felt like a enclosed musical whole (even though it's a small piece), and is satisfying.

Good work with GPO!
