temporarily splitting staves in Finale

Hey guys. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to split a staff for a short segment of a piece and then collapse back. I need to be able to split a choral piece into distinct 16 part harmony but I dont want 4 layers per staff (due to rhythmic differences, it looks like crap) nor do I want to have 8 staves throughout the piece as it is really just SATB divisi. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you'll need the 8 staves. Just optimize them out when you're done.

How short a segment?

Perhaps the 'Ossia' tool would work...

But, Flint's probably got the best idea - use 8, and then optimize the unnecessary parts out.

I've never had any luck with the ossia tool.

Only time I've used the ossia tool was to include one of those "range" measures above a vocal song.

One thing people seem to have difficulty with when they start out with Finale is that you don't work on the "finished" layout from the start. You need to enter notes, as many staves as are needed, THEN go back and adjust things and optimize out staves you don't need.

There's a logic to working in a notation prgramme like Finale. It's not always easy to get your mind wrapped around, but eventually, you get the hang of it.

In musical criticism, when issues of craft and technical consideration are set aside, what remains is more subjective. However, until technical issues are dealt with, the subjective portion bears considerably less weight.
