Two Ups and a Down

My newest piece. Think Particle Physics (at least that will make the name easier to understand). I am curious if anyone knows what the Name implies.

Here it is

Two up quarks and one down quark - that's a proton!

Anyways, I quite liked most aspects of the piece, some very cool dissonances, although I have to say I prefered Aries. I think there were a few to many sudden changes in mood and tempo in this one.

My main criticism I can make in the limited time I have at the moment is that the opening sounded a bit disjointed - especially with the slightly random long note in whatever instrument that was and the slightly out of place saxophone run.

Anyway, apart from the sudden changes in mood/tempo, the individual sections of the rest of the piece seemed to flow quite well within themselves.

I don't really have time to analyse all the specifics in form and development now so I think I'll just leave it at that. Generally quite well done!

A proton is correct. I wanted to name this piece Quarks, but a friend of mine has already used that name on a piece and I didn't want to seem to be copying him.

Sorry, there is no sax in this, just my attempts at using a new library and I don't have the procedures down right yet.

The whole piece is supposed to sound disjointed, because that is what quarks are.
But the opening section defines the piece with the major theme, so I can't really get rid of the long note on the contrabasson and bass.

I am still working on this one because there are still a few places I am not happy with.

Thanks for taking a listen and most importantly, letting me know what you thought. It means a lot to me.

Ron is back!! haha.
This is the most Ron piece you've done recently in my opinion. As always great colors, and very nice dissonance! There are some spots and transitions that are kinda weird, but yo can make it work. Keep it up.
So the forum is closing? I want to keep in touch, i guess through northern sounds!
Great Work

Scott.

My evil master plan didn't work, so YC is staying open.

I fixed the glaring mistakes in this, but not all of them. I got a few notes to change yet and The tempo is still off in a couple of spots, but I think it sounds a lot better now.

This is more my style and I like this one a lot.

Thanks for the listen.

Ron,

I like the balance and energy of this piece. The level of reverb seems not as much as you sometimes use, or, at least, the level here is perfect to my ears.

The piano part has a major feel to it with some "classic Ron (a)tonalities" in the other instruments - quite effective. The piece does jump around but not so much as to become disjointed and the flow does suit what one might imagine the motion of quarks to be. Overall a great success.

Now that I am using Sonar to get my reverb and other effects, I am not using anywhere near the amount of reverb I used to use. Better programs mean not having to overdo things.

This piece is heavily influenced by Prokofiev, who loved to jump things around.

I figure my next piece in this flavor will have to be Two Downs and an Up, or a Neutron and then off to the Leptons.

Thanks as always for the listen and the comments.

Ron

Ron,

the Ron-ish style shines in this one, very jumpy and choppy, and well you know i loved it. it felt like a got lost in the music sometimes, but it was that kind of lost where when youre a little kid lost in the grocery store....you cant find your mom but you know shes around. the thing that i most enjoyed and held it together was the rhythm. even though it was all over the place it seemed as though it was coherent... it most definitly latched on to me and kept the piece interesting. beautifully wonderfully and chaotically done Ron!

I love how you've got that "Prokofiev-ness" about your works...I'm in the works of trying to incorporate his ideas into my own style as well...enjoyed nearly everything about it; great off kilter rhythms, clever inclusion of quartal ideas (i think?), and maniacal counterpoint (typical Prok!)...my only reservation is that i wish you kept in mind your motivic and thematic material a bit more. i found myself forgetting what happened the measure before, i was looking for something to follow...great job, hope to hear more!

Sorry it took so long to get gback to you. I have been out of town and now I am swamped with homework.

As always, I look forward to your comments. I find them to be thoughtful and quite even handed.

Yeah right.

Regardless. when my greatest fan says something is great, doesn't that absolutely have to be true?

I look forward to your String Quartet!!

Steve

If you can incorporate Prokofiev into your music, do it. I find it odd that one of my greatest heros, was a balding, odd, nerdy sort of looking individual. But if I could have 1/10 of his talent, I would sell my soul to anyone dumb enough to buy it.

Thanks guys

Ron
