Valses Poeticos

I have not written everything myself, the melody and some of the chord progression is originally from Enrique Grandos' Valses Poeticos. You can say that have arranged it but also added and changed a few things.

I decided to arranged these pieces when I was in the middle of sorting out my sheet music. I saw this, and I remember playing it before - I remembered them as very beautiful pieces. Valses Poeticos includes 5 small movements, unfortunately I have only had time to arrange 3 of them. I am hoping to complete it the end of next week. (Since it is not 100% complete does that mean that is has to go the writer's block? If so, please move it there )

I decided to use a wind quintet but I may rearrange the third movement to a brass quartet since I would like the enhance the majestic feel that movement.

I have not really encountered any problems except for the repeat tool. I do not know how to make Finale play a part twice but having the ending changed. That is why the score is a bit odd. Hope someone can help me out

I guess I have nothing more to say, except for the fact that I am not done with the last to parts.

*crossing fingers hoping that someone may enjoy this*

Lovely work! Sounds beautiful when rendered through GPO.

The instruments start off quite low in their registers (with the exception of the oboe), which leads to a rather murky feel. I'm well aware this produces a certain effect you may have been specifically aiming for, but just bear in mind that extremities of register, particularly with regards to the clarinet, are normally avoided for good reason.

There are also a few spots where I think contrapuntally, what you have down isn't as effective as it could be. I'm going to assume you have some knowledge of counterpoint already, given the existing material is generally very well put together, so I'll just say this: pay more attention to the preparation/resolution of dissonance and exposing open fifths/fourths. Bars 17-20 were really quite special - the only real thing detracting from the effect was the appearance of those fourths and fifths between the oboe and clarinet.

Thanks for sharing - a very pleasant listen indeed!

Thank you for your kind comment

Yes, I was a bit afraid that it could be hard for the clarinet, but I really did not want to let it play to high either - the chalumeau register was really what I aimed to use. Of course I could re-orchestrate the entire part.

I will re-write those bars, I will probably edit the clarinet line. I do not rely on the finale playback too music, specially when I just have SmartSync. I was always a bit afraid that the bassoon would not be audible. Is that the case here?

Once again, thank you for taking the time to listen

The bassoon is in quite a strong register at the start, I think. It will certainly be audible, in any case. It's nowhere near as extreme as where you've placed the clarinet.

Yes, I was actually aware that the clarinetist would have a few problems playing it. I guess I have pushed the clarinet a bit too much - I am considering re-writing a lot of it

Ok, I started listening to it with the intention of being my usual nit-picky self, but I soon found myself immersed in the music and enjoying this beautiful work! I didn't particularly like the horn lines from m.25 on. The clashing of a (in the horns) with g, although always juicy, somewhat ruined the beauty of the piece (in a bd way, mind you)!

Cheers and I'm looking forward to listening to the finished music!

Yes, I will take a look at that m. I am sorry to say that the rest is going to be a bit delayed, unexpected assignments were given
