Visions for String Orchestra

This is a simple peice that I wrote a while ago to enter into a contest and was quite rushed to get finished.

Basically it was created by melodies that were used to contrast eachother. I really don't know anything more to say about it so enjoy.

A very fun romp, I actually enjoyed this immensely.

There are a few things I think might not really work in the context of a live performance, like some of your chords arrive a tiny bit too fast after a rapid run to be easily playable.

My only other worry is that the extensive individuality you've given to the contrabass won't quite sound as rich as you would like. I noticed a lot of dense, low register chords, which didn't quite work to my ear. Most of these were caused by the simple fact that you divided the contrabasses from the celli almost through-out the piece. A few places you dropped the c-basses and quite honestly, the celli could have used the support.

I particularly liked your little opening motif, and how you tossed it to different duo-sections of the ensemble.

Oh, the score could use some cleaning up as well.

In musical criticism, when issues of craft and technical consideration are set aside, what remains is more subjective. However, until technical issues are dealt with, the subjective portion bears considerably less weight.

Thankyou so much
Your right on the playabilty of it but luckily i got a pretty good chamber orchestra to play it, even after only about 15 min of practice. Also when I was writing the work I thought I could pull off a relatively seperate bass part because I was working with a small ensamble 3,3,3,2,1 but I agree.

Also I have quite a problem with my scores and they defiently need some cleaning.

just to correct a misconception under which you appear to be functionning:

a smaller ensemble with a more independant bass line will not be more effective. One single contrabass will not balance as well against multiples of each of the other sections.

if you were talking about a string quintet, then an independant contrabass part would one thing. however, as soon as you are talking about three 1st violins, three 2nd violins and so on, you will lose that single contrabass.
