Waltz in Ab Major

I wrote this from 2 to 3 pm based on a theme I came up with last night in the shower. Sounds like an unimpressive compositional process, but it's probably my 'prettiest' piece, though some might judge it as sappy and a plagiarizing of Chopin. I'll leave it up to you to decide

Attached is .mid

Some thoughts - Vary your accompaniment. The rolled chords on beats 2 and 3 becoming tiring heard so much. Work on your transitions to new sections and your approach to dramatic points -- you rely heavily on rallentandos or ritards of the prior material. You can anticipate new material, use contrapuntal techniques and hemiolas (and other rhythmic devices) to lead to a new section or climax.

sometimes its the simple music that makes my day...and hearing your piece surely did that. Terrific little waltz! *goes to listen again*

Tomas...u beast you. This is seriously a milestone in your composition journey. The melody is gorgeous. Pianistic writing - superb, despite the fact there is no score. The harmony is generous to the melody, supporting it fantastically. I disagre with the 'rolled chords' being Tiresome. Sure, you could vary the left hand a bit, but there is no necessary need to do so. It is perfect for a nice play on a sunday afternoon.

Well done. Post a score. I want to learn it!

Wow. Thank you all for the comments!

I do agree with composerorganist when he says the left hand is repetitive, it's undeniable: I was aiming for this to be a very simple piece, though, given that I composed it in an hour. Here's the .mus

Some composers wrote symphonies in a week or less. Im pretty sure the miniatures for piano by people like schumann, and brahms would have been composed under an hour as well. You did a good job, and when you can compose that fast, it meants that you as a composer are developing a 6th sense of music.

Goodridge - Glad you concur about the lefthand but please forgive me for being in a hurry pt to criticize. It is good work for something composed so quickly. Actually, why not do more of these w/o editing for say a few weeks and then choose two or three to tweak or rework into a larger piece (in fact beethoven's Bagatelles were written in a similar way). It is a great way to turn off your internal editor for a little while AND then see what patterns and ideas you gravitate to.
