Wolf Forest

Piece for a smaller ensemble written on sibelius. Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I thought this was a very well crafted piece. Nevertheless:

1. There appears to be only four woodwind parts. Are they meant to be doubled? Having only four wind players could lead to them being severely overpowered by the other instruments specified here.

2. What is the deal with the 3 piano staves? Did you want two players or one? This could be clarified by creating 2 or 4 staves.

3. I could not pick up an overall structure when listening to the piece. Even if this was intentional, I think the piece could be enhanced by a sense of direction. As it was, the ending felt quite abrupt.

Well done though. Some very nice ideas and orchestration.

The piece is meant to be played for a small ensemble but there should be about two people per instrument for the wind section. The ensemble I intend to play the piece with does have quite a powerful string section though. The piano part is meant to be played by one person, I split it into three sections to perhaps maker it more visually clearer to the pianist (hopefully). The middle stave is meant to be of least importance (apart from the beginning). I am thinking of reworking the ending, I'm trying to convey that sense of "escape" but at the same time make a 'natural' or smooth transition into an ending.

Jut some quick notes before I head off to work.

You have some nice things working in your favor. However, I feel you should connect some of your ideas better. Some things just appear to pop in out of no where, then die and then something else appears. Try to have some sense of continuity. Lastly your dynamics basically range from medium to LOUD. Try to be a bit more crafty with your dynamics.

I didn't consider it anything highly remarkable but the coda was pretty epic; I was pretty happy about that. You did express your want to rework the ending which is understandable but I like the general feel of the ending as it stands now.

On the contrary, I kinda like the structural obscurity and wonky continuity. (Though, admittedly, it was borderline obnoxious.) Notwithstanding, if that was your intent, you've executed it quite smashingly.

Also, the piece didn't seem very adequately "wolfy" or "foresty."

But I did enjoy it.

I agree with what DOFTS said earlier. It sounds like some parts just pop up out of no where. To me it doesn't sound smooth and connect together. It sounds a little like random parts thrown together. But Around 1:55 I kind of liked that part why I don't know ^^.

I do not understand the piano part,great strings

My intention for the piece was for it to consist of mainly of short repeating fragments and motifs with sudden changes to set the atmosphere. Kinda like how your senses change when you feel safe or in danger. However I'm not sure how effective this was conveyed. The piano part is meant to form the ground of the piece and keep it moving.
