Thumbs up Your opinions on Jeremy Soule?

I'd like your opinions on Jeremy and Julian Soule. They're considered some of the best video game music composers and their music can rival many film scores. Personally while I don't think they're all that great, I really love their music. It's very beautiful and I love the rich virtual orchestra sound they produce.

You can stream demos of their work at DirectSong

My favorite score would be the one for The Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion.

Um, I'm a bit confused:

So you met them and you think they're icky people but you love their music, or you just contradicted yourself in the same sentence?

Anyhow, I'm a big fan. I think the game world really benefits from the richly cinematic and orchestral scores that these two produce. I think that the appeal is less prominent now that more and more games are going with this kind of scoring style, but back in the days of Total Annihilation and such, Soule was definitely the shit when it came to game scoring.

I have my own reservations about him as a person *grumbles slightly* but his music is undeniably something I listen to regularly.

What I meant to say was that he's not really a genius or very innovative and although he sometimes self-plagiarizes he still composes great music.

What are your reservations about him as a person? He seemed like a nice guy in the interviews.

Pretty good incidental stuff, I'd say.

I like what they're doing. I'm a huge supporter of video game composers in general.

Jeremy Soule's music for Total Annihaltion seemed to fit the mood well, like yourself I don't think they're 'redefining' music, but they're certainly enhancing the world of gaming!

However, I think my favourite video game piece is the theme for the Legend of Zelda. I cannot express how much I would love to be picked as the composer for a Zelda game!

Ah Jeremy Soule. I think his music is definitly top notch especially for video games. In my opinion he has great orchestration skills he always manages to fit the scene very well.

Just checking: does anybody if Jeremy went to college or not? If I remember right he went straight into video games right out of high school but I could be wrong.

I think he studied composition with one of the best composers around in his area.

Also I like how he mostly uses the woodwinds for solos, and rarely for harmony, he usually uses a choir for that. I actually like the sound of the choir more, and there are virtually no problems in blending it, as opposed to woodwinds.
