Jabberwocky

My submission for the Jabberwocky Competition (formerly the November Competition). In this piece I'm experimenting with a more Romantic style than what I'm used to (you may hear some influence from Mahler and Mendelssohn). It's scored for a Wind Quintet, plus Tuba, Timpani, and Harp (for a total of 8 instruments, as allowed), and is just over the required 4-minute mark. It's also the longest original classical piece that I've finished in quite a while. I even finished a few days early.

Narration was read by David Barnes as part of the librivox project -- librivox recordings are in the public domain.

Also, there are a few... unconventional performance indications in the score. Like "frumioso". :-)
I'm trying my best not to give you an criticism yet. I'm not sure if this is allowed by me as a judge, but we'll see I guess. I'm very worried that differences in sound quality could hurt me as a judge. Of course, I try to look past it, but I'm still afraid it could be some sort of unconscious thing...am I making sense? anyway, I'd like to ask your permission to copy this music down into my finale 2011, with a VST playback. I'll ask this of other contestants with a MIDI playback. If you could email me the actual file, that would be even better! Of course you don't have to, I'm just trying to give everyone as fair an opportunity as possible. I'll avoid giving any criticism until the 27(?) when the competition is officially over. But thank you for participating!
Sure, that's no problem at all! I appreciate the feedback. I even just attached a MIDI file for you, if that makes it any easier, although now I'm playing just the raw midi, and some of the dynamics sound more drastic and unbalanced than what I'd envisaged.

FWIW, the MP3 was rendered using the SGM soundfont, loaded into in the sfz VST, and then run through a reverb VST. Apparently, my ears have become completely desensitized to the nature free soundfonts. :-(

And now I'm kinda wondering how much of the quality issue is inherent in the midi exported from my notation program (with limited expression), how much is from the quality of the soundfont, how much of it I ruined it in mixing & mastering afterwards, and how much just results from having poor speakers!

Once again, I appreciate the frankness!
(correction: "to the nature of free soundfonts.")
Poem: 44/50
Ensemble: 7/10
Composition Technique: 16/20
Creativity: 18/20

with an overall score of 85

Good job overall! I downloaded the .pdf and put comments into that. If you want them, just give me a way to send it to you!
I sent you a message with my email. Thanks!
