The Rainbow-like Impression (Mavrična impresija) for piano solo
7 Votes
Here performed by the winner of the category, the russian pianist Nikolai Kuznetsov.
The piano style is much influenced by modern impressionism, using frequent polytonal combinations of contrasting chords.

Very cool composition. It made me think that, if Debussy had been born a century later, he could have come out with something similar. This kind of scores are particularly interesting in terms of study. They show what you can really do in a piano, provided that you're daring and ingenuous enough. There are a lot of tempo and time signature changes, along with fleeting chords which create a kind of ethereal athmosphere. On a side note, you have an astonishing amount of live recordings of your pieces. It shows you are already making your path into recognition as a respected composer, at least in your country (which is a big success in itself).
I am really trying to find some rarely used combinations of chords. I like diatonic clusters, major and minor sevenths and ninths most but also any combinations that sound relatively soft. I hate aggressive dissonances.
You will probably find this strange but I am feel confortable writing for piano solo. I have only a scarce number of compositions despite my solid knowledge of piano playing and large number of chamber music with piano. That's probably because of too large literature for piano already written and at least in Slovenia pianists don't give a damn about contemporary piano music. It seems that for our pianists (and most of famous as well!) the piano music no longer exists after Prokofiev. No curiosity, no adventure. Pianist is a walking relic.
Regarding the large piano literature you are absolutely right - there is so much - even good pieces - that it is difficult to get any attention; however, if I were a pianist (I am just a hobby player), I would rather play unknown pieces than to record Chopin the 150th time... :-)

Wonderful work. Loved the atmosphere, the ideas, the color. I haven't heard all of your music you've posted but I believe this is the best piece I've heard by you, but perhaps I have a bias for piano music because I'm a pianist
It is impressionistic but it also reminds me somewhat of Scriabin's 5th piano sonata and later works. It works all beautifully, the ideas are fully developed and the length is perfect. My only criticism is of the picture of the rainbow on your youtube video, I'm willing to forgive that though for composing such a wonderful piece. Thanks for sharing, I'll have another!
