I organize my compositions by folder and file name. Each folder is named by the date it is created. All music I write goes into that folder until I create a new folder. The creation of a new folder is governed by content quantity rather than a specific time period, but is usually about 1-3 months, depending on how much I'm writing. Within each folder, each work is named by [Instrumentation] [Number] [Version (by letter)]. So this would be the fifth version of the third song I wrote during whatever time period.
