Chiptune "Canons"

* * * * * 1 Votes

Despite the name, these are NOT canons.  I think the name came from my original intention of writing a chiptune canon.  It didn't turn out that way, but I kept the name.  Sorry for the nontraditional use of the word.

These are a series of very short (30 seconds to a couple minutes long) chiptunes that I made in MilkyTracker.  They don't really have much structure.  I think the best way to describe them is that they are halfway between composition and improvisation.  It's like improvising on paper (or the computer).

I left out Canon 5 intentionally: it's really bad. :P  I temporarily left out Canon 3 for other reasons (although it's not particularly my favorite), but I will upload it tomorrow probably.

The pieces tend to start off with something relatively simple (like a beat and a bass line) and then build from off of that.

Canon 1: I like the general feel of this one.  I like the rhythms mainly.  Of all of these, this one seems like the most scattered.  None of them have good structure, but this one truly seems like a mess of melodies clumped together.  But I think this one has somewhat decent material in and of itself.

Canon 2: I LOVE the middle section of this.  That's why I repeated it verbatim twice.  Though I am not sure if I should not have added the slightest bit of variation the second time.  Some of the background melodies seem a bit over complex; the triangle wave toward the beginning, for example.  I think it could have been simpler and still have the effect I wanted.  I like how the ending is very different in feel, but I think it is a little sloppy.  It even seems a bit too different to fit in.  I also think some of the harmonies in that section could be better off.  I don't think I really like the portamento in the middle voices of those chords.

Canon 4:  This one is really really short.  The rhythms and the melodies are pretty strong in my opinion.  I also first used pulse width modulation in this one instead of plain square waves. One of my favorites.

Canon 6: I think this one is quite repetitive.  I also think it has too much going on at once.  It needs to be simpler.  The harmonic progression is really bland as well.  I have mixed feelings about the upbeat arpeggio effects when the melody starts.  It seems to dampen the rhythmic feel, but I think it gives it an interesting texture at the same time.  Despite all the things I don't like about it, I love the melodies, and this is also one of my favorites.

I really want to make a good length piece in chiptune.  I just haven't gotten around to doing that yet.  I need to break free from the half-improvisation habits I've made.

I would love critique and comments!  Thanks!

Hi,

Great stuff. I love the energy of your music. I like the second one most. The sixth one is a bit full and I would make it a bit more polyphonic in stead of layers. A good listen, thanx!

Excellent. I love this scraggy.
