Lilacs and Roses

Lilacs and Roses

This is song number one out of my set of three songs (I posted song number 2 here earlier) and it was written in August of 2011 as a way to just slowly come back into composition after taking a 2 month break. As a result, it's not very good, and not like my serious compositions. Nevertheless, it is one of my shorter and lighter works, so I selected it to be performed at an informal composer's concert. The recording is extremely terrible - it was done with one of those portable mics (And there is one mistake at end, whoops!).

I am playing piano (quite badly) and my friend Saloney is singing soprano. We had ONE week to prepare for this, so I'm quite happy that we performed quite well despite having only one week. The poem was written by another friend of mine, Hannah, and it is a love song, so I tried to give the song the same flavor that I got from the lyrics.

Anyway, enough about the back story. Hope you enjoy it! :)

(you'll realize I missed quite a few notes because I need practice to learn pieces and I didn't have much for this one).

Lyrics:

Darling, look at me; there is pain
in these brown eyes.
Pain that will go if you'll be mine
But come here darling;

Lilacs and roses
cannot match your grace,
so I just bring my love.
Oh, please leave me no chase!

Amorous, quick glances cast me down
into a trap of love.
It swallows me whole and leaves me
no choice but pulling on your ev'ry shove.

It's a matter of time
until Cupid finds
your heart.
So, come here darling,

Lilacs and roses
cannot match your grace
so I just bring my love.
Oh, please leave me no chase!

Wandering through fields of doubt,
unable to see
why love, sweet love, evades me
hoping that it was just a terrible dream.

Amorous quick glances cast me down
into your warm and loving embrace.

I can't help but imagine what a polished performance would do for this work. The lyrics are charming, and the piano-singer combination suits it perfectly. If you were able to get your friend Saloney to perform this again (provided that this time you both practice enough), the piece would be quite effective in the tradition of the lied - and I'd bet Hannah would be grateful as well :) . Thanks for posting it!
Very creative song, and I'd love to hear a more polished performance as well!
Thank you so much for your comments!

The problem is not so much with the performance - that was mostly fine. It was the fact that the recording device was very terrible. Yes, perhaps this summer we will try to come out with a better quality recording. I hope the music was enjoyable too!
I like this :D I want to compose something like this too! But it's out of my style boundary...

The lyrics are quite deep.. And it's sweet too! OH MY GOSH.. I'm wondering how your friend is singing all those notes.. It's so... HIGH!
The accompaniment piano is lovely too... It has been well arranged!! Nice work ^^
Thank you Dina!! :) I'm so glad you liked it! I will try and get a better recording of all 3 songs in the set by the end of the summer.
I know the a little trick if you were nervous when performing: take a deep breathe and relax. That will calm the nerves. I tend to do this before I have a performance, and it helps me a lot. Besides that, ensure you practice the part a lot, too.

Thanks for the tip! I really didn't play it that badly, though.. Maybe one or two missed notes, but for the most part it was right.

As I said, we didn't have time to practice. This was because both performers I had initially asked to sing it had other conflicts that came up a week before the performance, so me and this girl had to practice it roughly in one week.

A big big problem with the recording is the sound quality of the recorder and the piano being out of tune, so a lot of notes are masked and some notes are out of tune.

Thanks for the comment
