Quantum (String Quartet in D minor)
1 Votes
A String Quartet I first played on the piano in parts and very slowly. I later decided to turn it into my first string quartet as I a melody with a chordal accompaniment (homophonic) but in an orchestral and classical way, of course. The piece is in 2/4 and is written in D minor and modulates to D major later on and then back to D minor. There is a strong use of perfect cadences and chromaticism throughout the piece. Chromaticism is a favourite of mine and I have applied it in the bass line in an ascending and descending way and it is also in the first violin melody.
The piece has a certain structure which goes as such; there is a D minor idea at the start which repeats itself in the middle of the piece. Between these same ideas the violin plays a constant pattern of semi-quavers. The pattern is like Alberti Bass but in the melody. A piece to refer to this idea is "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba" by Handel.
The name "Quantum" came to me as I have a friend deeply interested in science. This piece is partly dedicated to him for his patience and admiration to me. It is also called "Quantum" because, as I like to say "The energy of this piece cannot be measured". The piece illustrates great and changing energy, especially when it changes from major to minor. The energy is also conveyed through the speed.
This is the first movement of this 3 movement Suite which is unnamed as present. I hope you like the piece and please give me feed back as I am always willing to develop the piece.
**I would just like to add that in this MIDI file the staccatos, accents and tenutos did not go through. The ending nots of each section are meant to to staccatoed and accented.
Thank you,
Richard W. J. Hughes
