Ecos del Tropico Op.33

re-post of March 2011...

Ecos del Trópico (Echoes of the Tropic)
Opus 33 for Orchestra

My 3rd Tone Poem, is too about taking a non common stuff to a symphonic level, this time, the "stuff" are two Latin
styles, the Bossa Nova (from Brasil), and the Salsa (mainly Cuban).

Having Harmony (Pitched instruments) and Rhythm (Percussions) as the two main elements, the Latin styles are defined more or less by the amount of each element in the total ambient.

Bossa Nova, always presents a chromatic and tonal harmony which carries big part of the rhythm too, percussions only have a discreet beat enhancement. (I'd say Bossa is 75% Harmony 35% Percussions) . Acoustic guitar has a truly important roll in Bossa, and was the most difficult element to emulate since I don't have a guitar in the orchestra.

Salsa has less harmony importance but a stronger percussion presence, that is not longer "discreet" but closer to "scandal", with more piercing percussion like the Agogo, (I'd say Salsa is 40% Harmony 60% Percussions). Some very unique elements are a pair of very high trombones and other I didn't/couldn't include, the Baritone Sax.

Samba would be the other style but totally minimizes the harmony presence and maximizes the percussions, (I'd say Samba 30% Harmony 70% Percussions) I didn't consider this style worthy to include on this piece.

Although, I did include a very personal style that is a fusion of Bossa Nova and Salsa that I have simply called "BossaSalsa", (I first used it on this piece) this fusion style worked perfectly to join the Bossa Nova segments with the Salsa part in the middle, having an ABCBA form being like this:
A = Bossa Nova, B = BossaSalsa C = Salsa

The Orchestration ? well, I could press the accelerator a little further, but I felt that would be taking this too far, when you "artificially" add complexity to something, it changes from "complex" to "complicated" and I didn't want that happen.

I call for some Latin Percussion are necessary for the feeling, and an Alto Saxophone which makes no problem at all, there is no orchestra where at least 1 clarinet player has an Alto Sax.

I just finished this yesterday and I keep using EDIROL while writing in sibelius, I have VSL but demands a lot of work, with time, I shall create some much better renderings for my pieces, meanwhile you'll have to deal with EDIROL.

I hope you like it, I do, also, I getting faster for composing, I wrote this in only 7 months Posted Image for 10 minutes, .... I'm getting better speed Posted Image...

I hope you like it.

Very pleasant music, excellent progression, very fluid orchestration and a sound that makes you forget the VST (Virtual Studio Technology).
The score of this piece actually helped me a ton. It showed me just how can unusual percussion instruments be effectively used to create a flavor without losing the harmonic appeal.

Congrats for your speed increase... Perhaps I should trade a bit of speed for quality.
Oh hey, I didn't reply you on this ? wrong of me...

@Corentin, yeah harmony progressions are very nice in this style, actually Bossa-Nova is about "being nice" is like the sound of vacations :P

@Austenite
Yeah Like I have said before to others, just imagine works like Carmina Burana, or Dafnis et Cloe without percussion ? no'mas no.

Also is time Percussionist are treated like the rest of the orchestra, I remember once in Dvorak 9th, the poor guy was sat there for 40 minutes, then he took the pair cymbals and clashed only 1 time, and not even in fff just mf, then went back to the chair, because there was another guy for the triangle... at least my piece will keep them busy :D
My old review of this piece still holds....
Thanks Anoilel, I do remember it, just it's simply not possible to move old comments to the new site, I told chopin but it can't be done.

Thanks again.

you still think the end is like rushing ? I like it, I actually added in my mind lyric to it haha, just is in spanish is in bars 279-290:

Qué bo-ni-to_es lo bo-ni-to,
qué bo-ni-to_es ta_es-ta co-sa
ya_'s ta se pa-re-se_a mi_i ,
ya_'s ta ya se va_a ca-ba_ar

sorry can't translate, is a sort of Cantinflas spanish impossible to translate :D

I'm gonna put Precussionists to sing that at the end.
Very nice, this brings back memories that are not mine to possess, but i still feel nostalgia, why is that?
Nostalgia ? not sure, I guess all my piece have that thing somewhere, but I didn't print too much memories on this one... oh you mean brings memories to you ? maybe you met someone in the beach :D
