Lord of Shadows - Epic orchestral action/drama
8 Votes
I haven't been too active lately, so here's a little update.
Its an epic orchestral action/drama piece like the title suggests...
I hope you like it!
I don't have a score for this. but I'll update this thread if I happen to make one.
Thanks for the comments!I don't have a score for this. but I'll update this thread if I happen to make one.
How can you make such music without a score.... never understood an explanation like this one... pitty
Well the explanation is pretty logical actually... I don't work with notation. I work with a sequencer. If I just import the midi from my sequencer to Finale, its going to be quite a mess, since nothing is quantized and its full of performance related stuff like key switches, velocity layered articulations, mod wheel automation and other stuff spread out over multiple tracks .How can you make such music without a score.... never understood an explanation like this one... pitty
It takes a lot of work to tidy up the midi data before its ready to be imported to a notation program, and at that point it still lacks all the required performance and articulation markings, and everything needs to be laid out in a way that benefits the readability of the music.
if you wish, you can check out this thread over at VI-Control forums.

I explain a bit about the progress of creating this piece on there.
You said you compose in a sequencer? Just wondering, what VSTs are you using?
Anyway, brilliant work -- but I don't want to repeat what everyone else has said
-Phil
I also have WIVI which I don't think I used on this specific piece, but I'm not completely sure.
Thanks for listening!
The high strings at the beginning sound a bit too soft. It might just be the mp3 compression...
I only notice that its too much rhapsodic: many really good ideas but they immediately disappear (for example: the choir part at 1'08'' is wonderful, but is long only 5 seconds and never returns)
(what did you use BTW for the choir parts? )
FANTASTIC job by the way, very beautiful and very illustrious and vivid imagery goin on here
I would really like to see you carry these ideas through in an orchestral fantasy of 10-15 minutes.
I do agree with alessandrogozzo about the rhapsodic aspect, but I would be proud to have written this myself.
Congratulations. And thank you.
This is just fantastic.
change nothing.
Is this actually recorded or is it created using a notation software? if so, which one. There's a purchase I need to make.
This would make be perfect for a film score my friend. you should see what you can do about getting it seen by professionals.
This is superb.
I don't know how you did this without notation, but congratulations!
Great work!
what vst-s have you used?
This is superb.
I don't know how you did this without notation, but congratulations!
well my workflow for this sort of piece involves making a extremely comprehensive piano sketch before sequencing the mockup it self. otherwise its almost impossible to keep track of the vertical structure etc. so basically i have a piano patch playing every part (of which i know what the instruments are going to be) before i perform the parts individually. i hope this makes sense.
Great work!what vst-s have you used?
everything and everything else. mainly NI kontakt based libraries.
Ok, but witch kontakt libraries? Cinesamples, EWQL, or Sample Modeling ect...?
mainly Lass, Cinesamples, Vsl, Wivi, Truestrike, Tonehammer etc.
Thank you!
Danny Elmann strikes back with a vengeance! ;-)
Should this not be in the film music section?
How this has been composed then recorded without a score would drive me mad! Still, pretty good score or scoreless. I like the remote key transitions, coupled with the effect the choir gives.
Really nice indeed!
What choir VSTs do you use?
What choir VSTs do you use?
I searched all the VSTs he mentioned in the list, and it seems that he uses Tonehammer. I also was wondering this. Man, I use garritan, and it sounds awful, I always wanted my scores to sound something like this.
