A Sax piece

saxpiece

Hey guys!

I have been in college for over 6 weeks, I believe. And, I have been working on various instrumentation class pieces. And, this is one of the blips I worked on.

I am posting this mostly for graham to see I am still alive, well, and writing. I might expand this later, but this is a good "A" section for a piece I might use in the future. Maybe add a piano part and make it the beginning of a Sax Sonata. I'm not sure.

Do you think the material presented might be good for development and incorporation into a larger work?

I appreciate your listening and your help! :)

-Connor.

My main criticisms are what I perceive as a lack of coherence and direction:

I like what you have done up until measure 3: establishing the tonality and creating a sense of arrival. I also like the new idea introduced at the beginning of measure 4: I think it could be a great unifying element since it is so distinctive compared to the other ideas in the sketch. However after this, there just seems to be a stew of loose ideas, and a stasis of overall direction. I think a more explicit development of ideas wouldn't hurt at all, as well as another cadential area or 2.
Well, as stated, it IS just a combination of ideas. haha. You're totally right about everything.

Remember, this is an Instrumentation class. So, we had to kind of do EVERYTHING we could in 45 seconds to hear all of the ranges and normal abilities the instrument has. So, there is the reason for lack of coherence. But, my main question is, do you think the material would be a good starting point for a longer piece?

You already answered that question for me. :) Thanks!
Hey, sounds weird to me, but that's doesn't mean anything bad...

You call for altissimo notes like they would be as easy as the others, remember those notes are tricks, everybody play them differently, (even same guy with different saxes) don't call to much for "the keys are not in the keyboard" because not everybody can do it, or will not sound like you want.... I.... can't play a good High B, is just too much. (oh wait, is B flat... still, very difficult)
Oh! I know, don't worry. Just remember that this is an instrumentation class assignment. We were supposed to try as MANY things as possible in a short amount of time so we could how the instrument works under various kinds of pressure.

This is in no way a representation of my writing for this instrument. haha.
