Lament for Magnus
2 Votes
A good day to all the listeners and composers on this site.
A close friend of mine wrote and published, together with some friends of her, a wonderful comic called "Heroes and Villains". They are a a collection of stories, all taking place in the same fictional city of "samaritan city". Some of the characters or situations in this story moved or inspired me to such an extent that I decided to write music for it. A kinda soundtrack if you'd like.
Although the idea had been in the back of my mind for quite a while *almost 3 years* and several sketches had been made, I never really found the time to finish most of them. They were to daunting for me to continue, especially the orchestral ones. Lately though I've had an insurge of inspiration and boldness *so to speak* and I've managed to complete five pieces for the soundtrack, three of which are orchestral in eight days XD.
This piece is called Lament for Magnus and it scored for : Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, English horn, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Timpani, 1st violin, 2nd violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.
it's an A-B-A structured funeral march in f minor, the b section being in A-flat major. Apart from the scope and size of the work in general, the thing that daunted me the most was how to find a suitable contrast to the preceding f minor section with regards to the A-flat major section. I struggled quite a few times before finally settling on the melodic lines that I developed in the finished piece.
No one mourns a villain, except for the hero whom worked closely with him and could not prevent the slaughter of his favorite 'nemesis'.
enjoy.

a score would be usefull thanks

Given the scale and amount of work I put in these particular pieces I'm rather hesitant to hand out scores..One doesn't know whether they'd be copied out or even published under different names.
It's an excellent orchestral piece with a great relationship between the melody in the woodwinds and the back-up in the strings. I do agree with Jan-Peter in the fact that your transition between A and B is a bit rough, but it is cleaned up in the B to A transition. Overall an excellent soundtrack.
This has a very monumental feel to it. My only comment would be to vary up a bit of the rhythmic textures you use to generate more tension and more interest. At times they get a bit repetitive. Nice work though. Good piece.
timpani tremolo notation fail....
Anyway very well done!!

The beginning gives it the full feeling of a sinister funeral march. The dialogue between the sections is outstanding, and the climatic section starting at ms. 31 is easily mistaken as an ending (which could be a signal that the first section could hold on its own as a separate piece, or that it needs being reworked to "save" some expectations for the "true" ending). The second section is very melodic and delicately orchestrated - too much for what a bad guy could deserve
.
Only minor nitpick: I don't think the piccolo can reach the E in the first line of the staff on ms. 10 (that note is also present in ms. 116). I once wrote a similar note for the piccolo in one of my orchestral pieces, and it was about the first flaw pointed out to me by the player. I'd suggest to switch the melodic line to the (then silent) first flute, which would have no trouble reaching it (don't forget to write it an octave higher!).
Thanks for sharing this piece!
