	Hi all.
</p>

<p>
	Just wanted to ask a general question about scoring software.
</p>

<p>
	I've been using MuseScore for a couple of years now, but have been told it's not capable of producing an engraving to professional standards.
</p>

<p>
	Just wondered what features it's missing that would be essential to professional quality work?

	A friend of mine sent me the following link this afternoon, regarding the impending demise of Finale, a music notation software platform I know many of you use.
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.finalemusic.com/blog/end-of-finale-new-journey-dorico-letter-from-president/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.finalemusic.com/blog/end-of-finale-new-journey-dorico-letter-from-president/</a>
</p>

<p>
	I'm as broken-hearted about this as if I'd lost a family member or beloved pet.
</p>

<p>
	Users will be able to get support and the ability to install Finale on a new machine for a year from now, but after that, you're on your own.  Finale will still run, but you won't be able to reinstall it on a new computer if you get one.
</p>

<p>
	They're recommending Dorico as a replacement.  You'll have to export all your Finale files to a file format that Dorico will recognize.  Dorico Pro, the highest tier they offer, will be available to Finale users for $149.00 for a limited time.  There is also Chopin's notation software available here on YC, and Sibelius.
</p>

<p>
	I've been using Finale for more than 25 years and I can hardly imagine learning a new software at this late date, but I guess I'll have to.  We all will.
</p>

<p>
	I’d like to hear opinions about what would be the most simple and best way to write (notated) scores for pop / rock bands, classical / jazz ensembles and orchestras and create good audios "at the same time". I would like to record midi-instruments (which could be notated "automatically" when playing) and add on top of it some real instruments (guitars, bass, drums, winds, strings etc.,) which I could notate in the same session, after or before recording.<br>
	I have Ableton Live 9 and Sibelius 7, but I’d prefer to work only with one program, since I’d like to edit the audio and notated score at the same time, to hear the good sounds and to see the score right away. The purpose is to create “demos” and a scores of my compositions for band members, artists and producers.
</p>

<p>
	I’ve heard Logic Pro might be good for this purpose? Experiences? I might not want to buy a new software right now and therefore would like to hear other suggestions as well. Any experiences with Livescore or Musescore (with Ableton)? How about Notion with Studio One?<br>
	Is Garage band totally out of the picture? What’s the biggest difference between Logic and Garage band? I’ve understood they work in a similar way, so one option could be to use Garage band until upgrading to Logic. Please tell me about your experiences. This might not be the right forum for these questions, so any tips for other forums are useful as well!

	For years,
</p>

<p>
	Those who relied on finale or Sibelus used either Garratian or Sib sounds. Both were decent sound set. No question there. Then came along Noteperfomer. This was game changer for us. It could music in new way that we never seen before.  After v3, they brought VST3 plug ins to us. And yes, some where still ram and cpu heavy. This came with tech. (A large size libary with mic positions and full articulations will require more space and ram vs one that doesn't).  They realize this, and thought it would be more accesible if instruments were pre loaded
</p>

<p>
	Alas, this idea was great. Some thought it was not. (looking at you VSTi companies).
</p>

<p>
	These same people align themselvs with muse score. and are selling a cheaper version there. *ugh*  This. is. not. how. you. compete.

	I went for Dorico Pro 3 originally, interested in engraving quality, having looked at several other products, their licencing arrangements, prices, and ease of use including the instructions. Dorico offered several advantages, one of which was working without a time signature.
</p>

<p>
	I installed it on a USB eLicenser.
</p>

<p>
	As Steinberg is going over to its own licenser on a computer, eLicenser support ends at end 2024. The choices were simple: if you want to go over to the new Steinberg licence, upgrade to Pro5 at a cost of £132 in the UK. I have no need for the upgrade but if I want to go on using the product - that's it.
</p>

<p>
	Okay. But doing this conversion was an outright headache. I kept getting error messages or claiming it can't proceed as other applications were using the eLicenser - which were rubbish. Dorico is my only product on it and it was not open. In frustration I kept clicking cancel on each popup. But then miraculously it started loading up Pro5.   It took around 1.5 hours to download everything and gave me a licence key.   So I was up and running.
</p>

<p>
	But no. Yesterday I receive an email warning me Dorico would cease to work in 7 days if I don't verify it. (I mean, for Chrissakes it must have known I already had a version to be able to upgrade it and get working). The instructions were as clear as mud.   It seems that it needed to verify that I had a licence on the eLicenser before allowing me to proceed further. Thus far it had only given me a temporary licence.
</p>

<p>
	It took another 3 hours of faffing around, talking on the forum etc to find out what I was supposed to be doing. Just thank the Good Lord I didn't throw my eLicenser key away as I intended. It needed to see the original licence to do the verification.  Eventually I got it working and "verified".
</p>

<p>
	I've honestly <strong><em>never</em></strong> encountered such an awkward, nightmarish installation.  Even on Windows 3.1 or 95 there'd been nothing like it. A list of instructions in structured English like a program specification is cried out for.  Thankfully, one of the chiefs on the Dorico forum explained what it was about and why. If only his words had prefaced the process I would have been miles more comprehensible.
</p>

<p>
	But it's done. The only advantage it offers me over 3.5 is that it no longer messes up tuplets when changing voices. For all that, it's probably still the best out there.

	Hi all, I'm trying to find the best and/or most versatile notation sw? I'm a writer guitarist w/ a lot of original songs in demo form on mp3 or other. Also, I play and sing live. I would like to be able to upload, score and transcribe my music, as well as sound output it in various "convincing" forms of instrumentation.
</p>

<p>
	It seems that the products I've been looking at do either well, but not both; ie Soundcloud and Musecore are fine for input, but lack in output quality. Finale &amp; Dorico have great sound output but are priced in the stratus! Can anyone save me some time and agravation with my search? I'm not looking for "Film Industry Standard" results...just something better than average.
</p>

<p>
	My goal is to ultimately hire studio musicians to read &amp; record my compositons, mostly for posterity sake. Thanks for answers in advance. Ron

	I was told to print hard copy scores to bring to my undergrad interviews. I have three scores I need to print, two of which are very large ensemble pieces (15-25 parts).
</p>

<p>
	I need them fairly soon, and Staples does same day printing and binding. The only issue is, I like to format my large scores with 9x12 marigins, so each part is more visible (especially to the older eyes of college professors). However, if I went with Staples or FedEx, I would have to do 8.5x11 margins, and I feel that the parts would look extremely small.
</p>

<p>
	There are a few smaller companies that bind and engrave 9x12, but these are big files, and I’m not sure if they will be able to get it done as quickly as I need.
</p>

<p>
	Should I just suck it up and go with the printer paper size, or is there a way I can get the margins I desire?
</p>

<p>
	Thanks in advance!

	Improvising comes naturally
</p>

<p>
	but I’m disorganized and playing music is analogous to writing on water
</p>

<p>
	the second it’s expressed- it’s like a butterfly
</p>

<p>
	I hope to turn an app on and play for lengthy periods while I record it in MIDI ( saving computer memory )
</p>

<p>
	but in addition to this. I’m increasingly attracted to Melodic aspect
</p>

<p>
	there is no melodic idea that does not interest me. Completely regardless of style    <br />
	I’m hoping to compile an ever growing “folder” of melodic ideas
</p>

<p>
	and being “slow” with things computer. I’m hoping a variety of means can be brought up to my attention
</p>

<p>
	for midi recording Logic Pro seems to be ok because it has a score mode. So when I later review my musing at the keyboard   I can quickly see what it was I played without struggling
</p>

<p>
	I’m assuming score view in logic can be configured in grand staff
</p>

<p>
	im so blown away by melodies that I’ve played for a lifetime.  But I’m sooo focused on the intervals  no as much the harmonies
</p>

<p>
	I am happy with this state of development. But I’m overwhelmed by how to catalogued. All the melodic ideas
</p>

<p>
	I don’t mean “buy a fake book”
</p>

<p>
	or buy the sheet music
</p>

<p>
	I looking at music more “microscopically”. Just a few intervals of songs that catch my attention. If this makes any sense !
</p>

<p>
	I tend to ramble. So ask any questions you might have. <br />
	thank you

	I contacted tech support, and they gave me a number of possible solutions, none of which worked.  I never again got Finale 26 to start up, and this week I finally gave up and upgraded to Finale 27 and Noteperformer 4, thankful that the NP upgrade was free.  I'm up and running again, but I shouldn't have had to drop a hundred bucks to get that way.

<p>Ok.</p>
<p>I take much pride to my scores. :D </p>
<p>Thus thought that I could give some insights to more advanced features in Finale, with examples, etc...</p>
<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE 1:</strong> I use Finale 2000, so some things may be updated, or outdates, but all principals remain the same! I'm sure of that! EDIT: I have downloaded Finale 2007 and everything I do, I also check to finale 2007, so it works to further versions as well...</p>
<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE 2:</strong> All instructions are aimed at <strong>scoring</strong> and not <strong>playback</strong>. I'm pretty sure that most issues mentioned here, won't have any effect on the playback whatsoever.</p>
<p>I've replied plenty of times as, to not cut the flow, but I don't have time right now to continue the thread... Will edit my posts to fill in the said topics.</p>
<p>If anybody feels that he would like to ask something, considerably difficult to do, feel free to PM me, or post here...</p>

<p>
	I did 't know where to post this....
</p>

<p>
	Well, that's the question: Dorico by Steingberg.
</p>

<p>
	I downloaded the trial version, which is full functional for a month. I was determined to work a bit with it, and I watched several tutorials on youtube.
</p>

<p>
	At first, it was a mess because the shortcuts are different depending on the language you select. So, many things the tutorials said are useless in Spanish, Portuguese, or French.
</p>

<p>
	I think Dorico needs to improve a lot, or incorporate lacking functions at the moment.
</p>

<p>
	However, I'm impressed how quickly I could write a score (in 1 day). And some things that are a nightmare in Finale, in Dorico are easy: non standard key signatures, complex tuplets and similar, chord notation, ...
</p>

<p>
	And one important issue: Finale manage very badly audio export. I've been using Finale for some years and from Finale 14 version the audio sounds with noises, clics, scratches and everything. I costs a los to get a clean audio. This is something that happens to many people (I read it in the Makemusic forum), but no solución has been given.
</p>

<p>
	With Dorico, this problem has dissappeared.
</p>

<p>
	Now I'm in "standby". My iMac has "died" after 8 years... Fixing it would cost a lot. So I'm waiting for a new one.
</p>

<p>
	But I am considering a change to Dórico, since I could buy it with cross-grade + educacional discount....
</p>

I have several instruments holding long notes, connected by ties, and I'd like them to dramatically decrescendo during the note (IE, fade out). I have put hairpins under the note but it has no effect on the playback. However, when the notes are not connected by ties, the notes change volume individually, and not gradually. Is it possible to change the volume of a held note while it is being played? I can upload an example if necessary.</p>

<p>Hello all,</p>
<p>I have a question regarding pick-up measures and how to go ahead with it in Finale 2009.</p>
<p>When I start a piece with a pick-up measure, I am supposed to end my composition with a measure equalling the number of beats minus those put in the pick-up measure, as you all well know. Hence, the last measure in 4/4 becomes 4/4 minus the pick-up (let us sau 1/4), hence in the example cited here it is 3/4 for the last bar.</p>
<p>Although I have the pick-measure at the beginning of my piece (e.g. one beat), I cannot figure out what to do to force finale into a last bar of e.g. 3/4. Finale will automatically put a rest on the fourth beat.</p>
<p>Hence my appeal to you all: how do I proceed technically in Finale to create a proper last measure.</p>
<p>Thanks all for your reaction,</p>

	So,  I'm trying to make a video game snow theme styled thing. Any ideas on what instruments I should use? I know that Piano would be one, and theres some type of Shaker-sounding thing, and also orchestra could be used too, but I can't do orchestra because I don't have it.

<p>Not sure if anyone can help me with this, but it's worth a try.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I'm using Finale 2012 with Garritan instruments through VST, and with the "human playback" feature.  I find that for solo strings (e.g. in a string quartet), short notes tend not to "speak" clearly compared with long notes at the same dynamic level.  So, I thought an easy solution to make things sound a little bit better might be to apply an invisible articulation to all, say 16th notes or shorter, that would just slightly increase the velocity of those notes to achieve a better sound.  So, I created an articulation with the playback effect of changing velocity to 105%.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>However, this doesn't work; when I play it back, the notes with that articulation are MUCH louder than the rest of the music (far more than 5% louder!).  It seems to make no difference whether I set the articulation to change the velocity to 101% or 150%; anything above 100% makes the note extremely loud. I'm guessing that this is caused by issues with the human playback, but since I don't fully understand how human playback sets dynamic levels, I'm not really sure.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Does anyone have an explanation or, even better, a way for me to boost the loudness of the short notes slightly for the solo string instruments?</p>
