Profile Information

  • Biography
Young is the foremost expert on virtual opera production and online collaboration with the debut of her machinima opera Libertaria: The Virtual Opera. Libertaria includes a live international cast and film crew, virtual choirs, sound synthesis, machinima, and contemporary choral writing, produced entirely online using crowdsourcing, social networking, and the Internet. Libertaria premiered October 5th, 2013 in Lake Worth, Florida, with additional screenings at the Buffalo Women and Arts Festival, the UK-site Moviestorm, the Holland Animation Film Festival, and other venues.

Current projects include Circuit Bridges, Latin 60x60 with Vox Novus, TEDx Buffalo talk on Virtual Opera Production, and a commission for Malletkat and Multimedia for percussionist Kurt Gartner.

Works performed internationally at the Beijing Conservatory, the International Computer Music Conference, Miramax's Project Greenlight, the Athena Festival, the New York International Independent Film Festival, Art Basil Miami, Turkey's Cinema for Peace, Art Miami, and Pulsefield International Exhibition of Sound Art, the Holland Animation Film Festival, Australasian Computer Music Confetence, Buffalo's Women and Arts Festival, and countless venues worldwide.

Young is a sought-after lecturer and writer on music technology, social media, online collaboration, marketing, and contemporary music.

"The music of Libertaria is an eclectic, accessible mix of styles, some of it more or less traditionally operatic, other parts closer to pop and Broadway. Fittingly for its subject matter, it has a rather dark tonal quality, though even the most somber moments of the score have prominent rhythms that propel the music forward." - Music Critic Greg Stepanich from the Palm Beach Arts Paper

Not limited to contemporary classical music and new media, Young enjoys writing commercial work like the upcoming third album for the Unravelling Music Series where she delves into everything from Lady Gaga to her original catchy folk tune "Pink Slips and Morning Joe," sung by Nashville veteran and member of the Buffalo-based The Carolina Gentlemen singer/songwriter Wes Walters.

  1. Ah, composing takes time, time that I gladly give. However, there are so many other obstacles to completing a composition, and some, of course, are more important than the next great symphony. Completing my first opera last year, Libertaria:The Virtual Opera, after three years of hard work cost me hundreds of hours of work, countless lost hours of sleep, and time with my family. I am glad to be finished with the work, although I already have several other projects in the works, but none so consuming as an opera. So time, sleep. But what does it give me? Composition brings me joy, it allows me to travel through the deepest levels of my subconscious and bask in the most mysterious corners of my mind. When I am at the piano or Malletkat (a MIDI mallet controller), I lose myself, quite literally, in creation. What it gives me directly relates to what I can give back. Some works are simple self-indulgences, others are truly meant for the audience members to experience something innovative and exciting. And of course, there is the appreciation of others who experience your work and have learned something new. (Great question!)
