  1. Hey everyone. It's been a while since I last uploaded a composition here (a collection of miniature pieces for flute & piano), but I've had some time and started a new collection of jazz miniatures. This new project is my attempt at trying something new and writing something that isn't clearly influenced by romantic era music. I don't write much jazz, so please let me know what you think of this first piece. Thanks! Jazz Short 1.mp3 Jazz Short 1 - Full Score.pdf
  2. A re-upload of a short piano piece I wrote several months ago. I'm thinking of trying to write more pieces in something like this style. Any comments would be appreciated.
  3. Hello! it has been a while since I've posted something on this site. I want to get the ball rolling again so here is a jazz song in AABA form that I have been working on. Now, I feel as though it may be profitable for myself to post the song/arrangement in increments so that I don't rush the song as a whole and can get detailed feedback on all the content in each section (the principle of focus and fragmentation I guess :P) First of all I am going to post the introduction of the song. (Hence this post) I will provide a lead sheet of the melody/harmony for the rest of the song and a score for the current section I am writing. In other words I think I have written the melody and harmony out sufficiently I just need to arrange it with voicings and counterpoint, etc. With regards to this intro I feel as though my first 8 measures of the intro are interesting with the basic but effective counterpoint and the harmony that flows with it. I am going for a sustained intro that doesn't have support of the hypothetical rhythm section. I'm thinking of adding the rhythm section after the intro ends which I feel is typical and effective in jazz arrangements. My gut tells me that in the second half of the intro the texture spaces out more with practically no counterpoint but I feel it maintains its drive through the concerted/block harmonies. I would gladly appreciate comments on the voice-leading as I am still learning/practicing this. Feel free to prove me wrong and tell me things other than what I am thinking about the piece as I would love for this piece to grow into the next "The Shadow of Your Smile" or "Stella by Starlight", etc.
  4. Hi everyone! This is a jazz song from my debut EP album called "You are my everything". I wrote the music and lyrics by myself and It's also me singing and playing on the recording. I think it somehow reminds me of Kissing a Fool by George Michael just a little bit. Please let me know how you like it!

  6. Hey, I'm finding quite problematic the handle of chord diagrams when they have parentheses, I'm not sure how did I did it but I could managed sibelius understand the text and automatically create the parentheses and make the additional numbers appear one on top of the other. For the 2nd chord you see in picture, I just write the 1st chord and when I click outside text object it automatically turns into 2nd, BUT I can't write any chord, it seems to recognize only some chords, for instance I try to turn the Eb7 into Ebm7 and it doesn't work, when I click outside it fails to create parentheses and it remains like text and becomes red. How can I handle these type of chord diagrams, or create a new style ? anyone uses parentheses with one number on top of other ? Thanks.
  7. Hi. I've been working on a folk-jazz tune for awhile now and I am having trouble finding interesting and good sounding (somewhat folky) chord progressions. I was wondering if someone here could give me some useful tips?
  8. Hi all, Rogier Wildeboer & me are participating in a film music competition in The Netherlands called "the entertainment experience". It's organized by our most famous director Paul Verhoeven, you might know him from basic instinct. In this competition everyone can take part, but you have to get votes for your work to win. So here is where you come in, we'd like to ask you to vote for us! It can be done easily, just click the big 'stem' (=vote) button beneath the video and login with your facebook or twitter account, it's as easy as that. We'd appreciate that very much! Here's the link: http://www.entertainmentexperience.nl/audio/wi1wf1t9fqetym4pwg0o5giwi Thanks! Best regards, Rogier and Hugo
  9. Hi everyone! I am working on an arrangement for jazz band that is almost entirely in 9/8 or 9/4. As with most latin charts, this arrangement will rely on a solid percussion groove. However I don't know a whole lot about latin rhythms apart from what I picked up by watching our high school jazz drummer, and on top of that, I can't find any examples of 9/8 latin to build off of. I was hoping there might be an expert here who knows of any musical examples that apply to what I'm trying to do, or who can give me some much-needed advice! Attached is my attempt at my 9/4 latin groove, with the option of two different bass drum parts: drum sample 2.pdf In the above drum pattern, I am trying to accommodate for two different beat divisions, which fit two different bass guitar lines at different parts of the song: 1) 9/8 + 9/8 or 3-2-2-2 + 3-2-2-2 2) 7/8 + 7/8 + 2/4 or 3-2-2 + 3-2-2 + 2-2 Since I don't really know exactly what I'm doing, I would appreciate any comments/suggestions. If you need more detail into what I'm aiming for please let me know. Thanks!
  10. It seems that I have gotten bored of playing the same old songs on the sax. Does anyone have any suggestions on a fun jazz peice to play?
  11. Hey everyone, I just wrote a book called, Cello Chords, which is a guide to harmony on the cello. It covers 11 different types of chords in all 12 keys and is an excellent resource for exploring all different types of music on the cello. You can check it out and purchase it here: www.bryanwilsoncello.com/cello-chords. Thanks guys!
