  1. Note: This is a hypothetical situation: Say I was writing an orchestral piece, and I was planning to give it to my local orchestra. I know that the 1st clarinettist is brilliant, so I write an extended solo which I maybe wouldn't have done otherwise. What do you think about writing music for a specific orchestra, who will hopefully be able to play it well? When doing it, do you think about the players themselves and their standard? Or do you just compose for orchestra/ensemble without having anyone in mind?
  2. Hey folks, This is my latest composition, Ruth. It will be performed by my church's orchestra sometime in the Spring or Summer. I am looking for feedback on this so hit me with anything you've got! I know each section is pretty short, but it's what I had to do in order to fit the type of concert it will be performed at. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c3YJdnU_Lg
  3. After writing several small pop/easy listening style pieces, I have decided to go for it and write a larger work: an opera. I have the story down and I even named some of the characters after composers I really admire. I decided to outline the story and journal about my characters before doing anything else. Now I am going to move along and start writing the libretto. The biggest obstacle for me is writing for orchestra. I am a pianist and I can write for piano, voice and a solo instrument like one violin or one flute. But a full orchestra? I have zero experience in that. Maybe if I write a piano part and then transcribe it to various orchestra parts that will make my life easier. I also want to know the little nuances like the difference between writing for C Trumpet vs. B Flat Trumpet? Any recommendations on how to learn about this? My community college does not offer an orchestra writing class.

  5. Hey guys, sorry for not posting recently. I've just moved to start going to school for organ performance, but I've been getting back into composing over the past weeks. Here's a project I've started and finished during that time.
  6. Hello, This is my first post on this website. I am a radiologist doctor in Thailand who really loves composing music. This song was originally written as slow ballad music sung in Thai language. Later I made this arranged version. I record this on Sonar. Love to hear your comment. PS. You can also check other works I compose on this soundcloud account! https://soundcloud.com/charat-chukiat/i-cant-forget-you
  7. Work in progress! Well... so this year is my graduation recital and I wanted to finish with something "big" (Yeah, some weirdly restriction that limits the amount of musicians we can have on the recital) Scored for a chamber Orchestra. Every comment is helpful! 1 Flute 1 Oboe 1 Clarinet 1 Bassoon 2 Horns Strings
  8. Act III Intro-Recitativ-Aria.mid Here the beginning of the third act of an opera that I never finished. Enjoy it!
  9. This is my first time I am composing a piece for so many instruments so any feedback would be very helpful. I hope you will like it. P.S: This score is the third part of my series of scores called The Legend of Nabhi. You can also listen to the first two parts if you want.
  10. Hello. I have question about solo bass singer. How low can a bass sing and yet be able to maintain a full resonating Fortissimo? For example, could it have the same Fortissimo low D (D2) as a Bassoon playing it in low D? Thank you.
  11. These are my "Two Sententiae for String Orchestra, Op. 309". It is rarely that I compose for orchestra. The last composition, a "Concertino for Classical Guitar and String Orchestra", was composed back in late 2015. I had shared it here almost two years ago. Here is its link: https://www.youngcomposers.com/t33864/concertino-for-classical-guitar-and-string-orchestra/
  12. Hi guys, just released a raw edit of my new epic piece Emotude III for Piano & Orchestra, hope you enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awF9bZ2HpFA&feature=youtu.be Many thanks.
  13. Here is a piece for orchestra that I have been writing lately.
  14. This here particular piece is one that has been in development for around 7 months now. Initially the goal was to have it sound solemn, however this expanded to a quick uplift from what it once was. The backstory was slightly odd to say the least, and at the times I was writing, I didn't even realize I was changing the mood of the song. So, now I'm looking for feedback, name suggestions, etc. What can I do to improve this song, what do you all think as of yet, seeing that its not even half complete and what would be an appropriate title for it? I'm bad with titles.
  15. Hi everyone! This is my first vocal/choral work to post here so far (If I don´t count a jazz song with my vocals which I´ve posted in the jazz section before). I wrote this one for strings, piano and soprano, for a talented Croatian singer Hana Huljić who also happens to be a great composer aswell. However, this is still a demo and the singer on this demo did not have any experiences with singing opera before and she is not a soprano, so it was a bit high for her, but I still love her performance very much. She´s a friend of mine and was very willing to sing the demo for Hana, I´m very thankful to her. I always loved Ave Maria songs, especially the Schubert one, and I always wanted to write one myself one day, and the day has come. Since there are so many Ave Maria already, I decided to write it for "Zdravas Mária" which is the Slovak equvivalent of the prayer. Please let me know how you like it!
  16. First post here, this is an orchestra work I did a while back as an ode to Virginia (My home state) it takes you through various regions of the state such as the Tidewater, the Appalachians, the Blue Ridge, and the Shenandoah valley. I was inspired to write this when hearing the intro for Appalachian Spring by Copland. I remember our teacher saying it was meant to capture a morning in the Appalachian Mountains (where my family is from), and thinking to myself that Copland nailed it, but I wanted a piece that would do the same for the whole of Virignia (Or at least parts of it). I sought to emulate this in the beginning of the piece. The piece concludes with my take on Oh, Shenandoah. A river that rolls through Virginia which I spent many summers on. Let me know what you think, and yes I know the score is horribly engraved.
  17. Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, and this is my first topic here. I "composed" this very short Intermezzo, for bigger a bigger work I am planning to write. After assigning the theme first to the strings and next to the winds, I do not know how to continue (I'd like to develop the main theme with some variations, though). I leave the score and the Midi file here. let me know what you think about it and if you've got suggestions on how to continue it, please! Intermezzo (Nenia).mid Intermezzo (Nenia).pdfIntermezzo (Nenia).pdf
  18. Here is the first scenes of my crucifixion composition. Ya'll let me know what you think please. I've tried to label each section with what part of the story it corresponds with. (I know it's pretty short but I had a time limit, and there will be narrations and skits in between each part). Also I realized that there's a part in 'Jesus in Gethsemane' in which the Flute I part cuts out for two notes, so sorry about that. The Crucifixion Score PDF.pdf
  19. Hi all, this is my first time here. Just wanted to share this and see what kinds of things you're hearing. It's very minimal and simple (but it builds!) I have little-to-no formal music theory/training, just love making sounds :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIlrHgd85Cg
  20. I made an orchestral piece in November 2017 called "A night in gotham city". I hope you like it!
  21. Hi All! I'm curious to hear others thoughts on this piece I made this past spring. This track features various hardware synths including the Moog Minitaur & the Korg EPS-1, as well as a String Section and Solo Vocalist. Thanks in advance for your insight!
  22. Here's a piece I did years ago, which I recently put onto Sibelius. It's Baroque/classical(ish) but with extreme orchestral minimalist bashes. Its very rough and def needs tweeking, but whaddya think? Hope you enjoy Mike
  23. Here's a piece I did years ago, which I recently put onto Sibelius. Again it's Baroque/classical(ish) but with extreme orchestral minimalism. Its very rough and def needs tweeking, but whaddya think? Hope you enjoy Mike
  24. So for the audio file I am attaching the YouTube video because I still can not get the MIDI to work right on Finale (it sounds like garbage when I try to save the MIDI file) so I am using the WAV file in the YouTube video (sounds way better). Unfortunately, the score is a little hard to see in the video so I recommend using the attached PDF for viewing and the video only for listening. Thanks for your comments!
