  5. Hello! I just would like to have some feedback on this track I wrote. I wanted to represent a typical traffic jam situation in a very big city. The piece is written for a large woodwind ensemble, piano and percussions.
  6. About half a year ago I admitted to one of my friends: "I haven't composed a thing in a few months! It seems like I just don't have the time for it any more." he told me that I can make a short piece for piano, and I decided to add a twist, thinking to myself: 'I'm going to make a collection of pieces for two people and one piano!" It took a while (half a year apparently), but I now have a collection of seven original pieces for four hands! yey! Now you must be thinking "the hell does he want from me? I came here for an orchestral piece!" Ah! There's a second part for the story! A month ago I decided to experiment with one of the pieces, thinking: "This one sounds like it could fit as an opening to a video game, but it has to be more... orchestral!" I've never written a piece for a full orchestra and now the time has come. Here's what I ask from you, the reviewer (of course, these are just guidelines, you don't have to answer everything): 1. Criticize mainly the orchestration: *Things that made sense to me but wouldn't make sense in a performance (Instruments too quiet, too little of a time to switch between instruments, the Bassoon won't hear the bass well, etc.) *Things that are put in the wrong instrument ("Are you crazy? a Tuba can't make a trill in such a low register! You know what? a Tuba shouldn't make a trill at all!") *Things that are just not written the way I wrote them 2. Criticize it as a composition (I'll upload the original four hands pieces so you can have a look at a simpler version) *Is the melody too much of a cliche? ("That sounds a little like a mix between the Shire theme and a regular fanfare!" [I promise you I didn't have the Shire in mind, I just thought of it about an hour ago and now I'm scared that I'll have to start from scratch]) *Are the harmonies and scales too simple? *Is it too short? (because I've been told that it is, but doesn't really want to make it more than a cute and short fanfare, might change my mind though) *What about the rhythm? Too repetitive to the point it sounds like a loop and not like a fanfare? 3. Tell me whether you think it could fit in an adventure montage in a movie or as an opening for a computer game. 4. For those who are more familiar with my works (If there are any here)... do you recognize the references? Huge thanks in advance!   8. Star Wars belongs to our cultural heritage. The music is truly phenomenal! Written by John Williams, the man that plays in his own league. He is one of my biggest examples and a never ending inspiration source. How great it is then to attend a live performance of the International Symphony Orchestra of Lviv and the National Choir of Ukraine 'Dumka' playing his music (and from Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Mykola Lysenko, Ramin Djawadi and Vangelis). It was mindblowing! In this video I'll do a short analysis of what is happening on the stage during the Imperial March, Darth Vader's Theme. The music track that has been released in 1980! Hopefully you'll enjoy it! And that it inspires you to write (more) orchestral music for film. Cause maybe on one day ... your work might be performed on stage by a symphony orchestra and choir like this 😉 https://youtu.be/t2L7cB5nRro From a theoretical point of view this composition is also quite fascinating! I can talk about it for many hours. Did you know: During the march all of the pitched instruments playing (strings, horns, and timpani) are at or near the very bottom of their range. The result is a very dark color to the sound. Harmonically, it focuses on the dark sound of minor chords and presents distorted versions of what would otherwise be normal progressions (i–#iv–#v–i in G minor) Melodically, the theme is constantly moving in the downward direction Fascinating!
  9. I finally finished my new composition by the end of my summer holiday. The music is based on a few Japanese forest paintings I found online, I used some unusual harmonies and melodies which may remind you of some Japanese style music (plus some chromatic harmonies). Please have a listen

Here is the first draft of a serenade that I have written recently for the following orchestra: 2 Flutes; Oboe da Caccia; 2 Clarinets; Horn in F; 2 Celestas; Violin I, II & III, Viola I & II; Violoncello and Double Bass. I tried to add some chromaticism into the harmony to richen the tonal landscape throughout the different ideas. I might enter this into a competition - what do you guys think?
  12. Hi everyone, I've been composing music for 3,5 years, but it was not until recently I decided to start uploading my music to the internet. I've never received any musical education, I had to educate myself. The first piece I decided to upload is the "Sonata for Viola and Orchestra". Please note, that even though it says sonata in the title, I wasn't sticking to any particular composition form. I would appreciate any feedback you can give me on both my orchestration and composition and your thoughts in general. For the story behind the piece, you can check the description of the video attached here. My idea behind this composition was as follows: The motif that represents life gets introduced in the first part of the composition in a major key (0:00-0:56). Then the piece switches to a minor key and a "loss" motif start playing by a solo viola, representing the losses during the war. After the second repetition of the motif (1:00-2:24), the life motif comes back now in a minor key representing that life has changed for the worse (2:24-3:15). The loss motif is then repeated again and the piece concludes on an unstable minor add9 chord to show the uncertainty of the situation (3:15-4:30).   13. This is my first ever 'proper' piece for orchestra. It was going to be performed by a student orchestra back home, but the conductor has postponed on me twice already and I suspect it might not ever get played, which is a shame. It started off with the initial melody, which appeared in my head one day and stayed there for a few weeks until I finally got it down on the score. I always intended the piece to start off light and get darker as the piece progressed, although I never had any idea what the actual structure was going to be until I was almost at the end. In a way, the piece is kind of representative of aspects of my personality. This piece features a lot of the harmonic and colour-related ideas that I've been playing around with during this last year of my master's degree. It was also my first ever serious attempt at writing for a string section, which turned out to be harder than I thought - a lot of the feedback I got from my tutor as I was writing this piece was on how low I was writing the violins and violas, because I think I was subconsciously treating them like winds. I think I managed to fix a lot of those issues by the end though. Overall, writing for orchestra isn't something that appeals to me a lot right now, probably because I'm just not used to it, but that might change as my career (hopefully) progresses.

I Just finished an arrangement for a string and woodwind orchestra of one of my studies into form (originally written for piano). Here's the video! I would love to get some feedback on it!   15. So, I decided to finally get around to fully orchestrating my piece for concert band, "Baron von Munchausen" -- string section and all. I was surprised that it took only a few hours of my day today. Most of the work was simply rephrasing the saxophone section as a string section, and adding some new string parts as well. The wind instruments definitely still take center stage, though. I also made some minor tweaks to the harp part and other instruments. It's a fun, adventuresome piece -- hopefully in the spirit of the Baron himself -- and I hope you'll enjoy it. I'd certainly appreciate hearing whatever thoughts pop into your head as you listen.   21. Guten Tag! This is one of the projects I have been working on this semester! Feel free to check out the concept behind it at this blog post: Composition Notebook: "Morning Birds" - the story. What I am attaching for ya'll is the full score (which includes the cues for the three different flute parts, but not the actual parts), one of the flute parts (so you can see what they look like), a MIDI rendering of all the orchestra and flute parts combined, and a MIDI rendering of just the orchestra part (Titled "Three Violin Version..."). One of the flaws of the combined MIDI file is that the flute parts are made up of several short fragments/'bird calls',as you will see in the attached flute part, and the players will be improvising which bird call they play when. In other words, it will be a much more organic process than a computer just playing them all in order, as happens in the recording. I think the MP3 of everything combined sounds pretty terrible and clamorous which is not at all the intent of the piece. I suspect that this chaos will be lessened considerably when real players are performing this. If anyone has experience writing this sort of thing, I would really appreciate any advice you'd have to offer. Also, I am happy to hear comments from anyone about this piece, whether they be about the orchestral writing, the special effects, or anything else. Thank you and enjoy!
  22. Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but i'm hoping i can get some much needed help. I recently started working on my very first musical composition and it has multiple sections. The "B" section is a Waltz that preferably needs to be in E Minor. I've never written a Waltz or Classical music in general. so it would be much appreciated if i could have some ideas on how to take it. Thanks, Weston
