  1. Hello Everyone, Here's a piece I wrote recently that is on Spotify, a full 8-track album is to follow. I will up load the score to view soon. For now, let me know what you think. Thanks!
  2. I have had quite a lot of time over the past couple of days and tried to finish this piece. I'm not sure if this piece should be called a fantasy or part 2 to be honest. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
  3. Trying to write happier pieces as most of my stuff is depressing. Problem is I find it just sounds cheesy when I attempt it. This is one I finished today.
  4. This is a piece I wrote in 2015 that I recently added/edited to Finale, it’s part of one of my collections I’m going though and notating, thought I’d share it, enjoy
  5. This piece was written in Prague for a friend I made there; it is in five brief movements and the inspiration is from medieval Occitan literature. The organization of the movements depicts a "legend," or some sort of story which one recounts to another, beginning in the morning and ending in the evening. The first movement is an alba ("sunrise"), which is similar to an aubade -- a morning love poem --and the piece serves as an introduction to the set. The second movement is more lively and is a poem celebrating the arrival of spring. The third movement is pensive and reflective, highlighting the harp, and ends with an unadorned quotation of a kyrie. The fourth movement is the most vivacious in the set and is an energetic dance reinforced with numerous repetitions. The final movement is a serenata (or, serenade), which is similar in concept to the opening "alba," though a serenata occurs in the evening, thus demonstrating the course of a day's time; the piece utilizes material from all the previous movements to provide a sense of total synthesis.
  6. My master's degree is starting to draw to a close, and I'm very aware that every piece I write now will be one of the last while I still have my tutor. For that reason, I've really tried to push myself beyond my current boundaries wherever possible. This piece, while not incredibly 'contemporary' sounding I suppose, in some ways represents the culmination of my efforts and explorations while at this institution. I've pushed my harmonies and chord progressions as far as I'm personally willing to right now, and also used some new string techniques that I'd not really explored before. Some of this piece, especially the second half, is definitely among my favourite music I've ever written. I've still kept to my usual style of working with very short bits of material and seeing where I can take them, but this piece is roughly divided into three or four smaller sections which have their own separate ideas as well. I've also become very interested lately in sounds that 'morph' over the course of a single note. Usually, that just means fading multiple instruments in and out on the same note. I feel that this is an area that isn't adequately explored in a lot of the more widely played contemporary repertoire, especially in more amateur-aimed music. This piece will be performed at the start of May by a professional ensemble (including a very skilled concert pianist, fortunately). It'll be conducted, which is why I put the piece in this section. I've put it on Soundcloud as well if that playback is working better than this site for whatever reason. There's a couple of really minor changes between the score and the recording, because once you start polishing the score in Sibelius you often kind of ruin the playback.
  7. Hey Guys, This is just a piano piece, I'm really interested in your opinion. What do you think?
  8. Hello everyone; "Feeling Free" is my first composition. It's an original piece that depicts our desire for a carefree attitude in our daily life only to be faced with daily struggles that bring us down; however, free-spiritedness will prevail. I tried to capture this struggle in this Jazzy – Swing-esque Composition. I hope you will enjoy listening to it and looking forward to hear what you think of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oFtIc8Yfpc
  9. Here is my song to the poem "Im Nebel" by Hermann Hesse. This is the first performance of many and we did not have all the time we wanted to practice it. I hope you enjoy anyways.
  10. Hi sorry haven't posted for ages, been busy! Here's the 2nd Movement of my Piano Concerto. I composed it when I was younger, but decided to re-work it. Will be uploading 1st and 3rd movements onto youtube soon. Hope you enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVs3_spSBD8 Mike
  11. Made a challenge of composing a piece per day a while ago. Unfortunately most sounded a bit crap. These are ones I think have ideas that might be worth doing more on. Do any of them have ideas that could be used? Also, which ones should just be forgotten about? If you do have a listen, thanks for taking the time.

  18. New here :) Here's a piece I did on MuseScore, a march for piano. Curious to know what you guys think, how it might be improved. I am just starting to learn how to sight-read, after years of just messing around on the piano and improvising without reading.
  19. Hey guys, this is my first time on the forum. Just wanted to post some of my music and see where it takes me. This is my first solo piano EP that I've written, it is called distance makes the heart grow fonder and it depicts the feelings experienced by a couple who love each other, yet are separated for a while, starting with a piece depicting the farewell on the train station, then moving to a portrayal of the man experiencing loneliness but thinking fondly of his love "while watching the stars". The third piece is the central piece of the EP and is a melancholy love theme. The final piece is supposed to be a breathtaking depiction of when the eyes of the couple finally meet for the first time again and the bliss and relief of seeing each other again. Link to the EP on Spotify: Constructive criticism appreciated! Please let me know what you think. And if you like it, adding it to your library on Spotify would help me massively. Check out two of the pieces on YouTube as well: Thanks!
  20. Hey all! It's been a while since I posted anything, but I thought I'd mark my return with this new piece! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlqDGZ5r0uw I hope you like it! Dan
  21. After writing several small pop/easy listening style pieces, I have decided to go for it and write a larger work: an opera. I have the story down and I even named some of the characters after composers I really admire. I decided to outline the story and journal about my characters before doing anything else. Now I am going to move along and start writing the libretto. The biggest obstacle for me is writing for orchestra. I am a pianist and I can write for piano, voice and a solo instrument like one violin or one flute. But a full orchestra? I have zero experience in that. Maybe if I write a piano part and then transcribe it to various orchestra parts that will make my life easier. I also want to know the little nuances like the difference between writing for C Trumpet vs. B Flat Trumpet? Any recommendations on how to learn about this? My community college does not offer an orchestra writing class.
