  2. Is Formal Training In Composition Necessary At One Point Or Can One Find One's Way Just Through Practice Composing And Studying Pieces? What do you think? I have scarcely gotten any training and compose as an amateur. I am wondering how far I can go like this. Will I find my way to composing even symphonies, or would that necessitate some formal training? I know that Elgar became a composer through self-study. Would training generate symphonic ideas where none occurred before, or improve one's original ideas?
  3. A little music background: I played the piano since the summer before sixth grade. I took private piano lessons with various teachers (not the kind you might meet at a conservatory of music or a college) until I quit about five months ago. Now I'm on my own, and I'm going to teach myself to become a virtuoso pianist. The daily practice routine I'm following is 1) Hanon exercises 2) scales and 3) three to four piano pieces. Also, I've recently taken the position of piano accompanist for my high school's choir, so I have to learn piano accompanist parts in addition to my current routine. The musical pieces I'm currently learning aren't easy though (Hallelujah for example). I need some advice on how to practice difficult pieces and what is an effective practice routine. I'll really appreciate it if anyone can give me some good tips!
  4. I'm finding it hard to word this topic in paragraph form, so here are my questions in list form. -I hear some of composer X's work somewhere and really like it. -I want to draw from that style for my own compositions. -In particular I want to apply these styles in a cinematic way. (In the near future, I may get to score some student films.) -What is the best way to go about this? -Should I buy some scores and analyze them? -Are there particular analysis techniques that I should use for cinematic applications? -Should I write "practice compositions" where I attempt to duplicate the styles I want? -Am I over-thinking this? Thanks in advance for your answers.
