  1. Star Wars belongs to our cultural heritage. The music is truly phenomenal! Written by John Williams, the man that plays in his own league. He is one of my biggest examples and a never ending inspiration source. How great it is then to attend a live performance of the International Symphony Orchestra of Lviv and the National Choir of Ukraine 'Dumka' playing his music (and from Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Mykola Lysenko, Ramin Djawadi and Vangelis). It was mindblowing! In this video I'll do a short analysis of what is happening on the stage during the Imperial March, Darth Vader's Theme. The music track that has been released in 1980! Hopefully you'll enjoy it! And that it inspires you to write (more) orchestral music for film. Cause maybe on one day ... your work might be performed on stage by a symphony orchestra and choir like this 😉 https://youtu.be/t2L7cB5nRro From a theoretical point of view this composition is also quite fascinating! I can talk about it for many hours. Did you know: During the march all of the pitched instruments playing (strings, horns, and timpani) are at or near the very bottom of their range. The result is a very dark color to the sound. Harmonically, it focuses on the dark sound of minor chords and presents distorted versions of what would otherwise be normal progressions (i–#iv–#v–i in G minor) Melodically, the theme is constantly moving in the downward direction Fascinating!
  2. One of the many areas encompassed by my nerddom is Star Wars. When I was younger, I read a lot of the Expanded Universe books and would often make up soundtrack music in my head while reading. About ten years ago I decided to try writing soundtracks for Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy. I finished book 1, Heir to the Empire, but the project has lain in abeyance for some time now. Recently, though, I've started working on book 2 again, and I realized I had never shared my Heir to the Empire music here. This is long, but I decided to upload the whole thing; feel free to skip around. It starts and ends with the usual John Williams main title/end credits formulas, and some of John Williams's themes are used fairly liberally throughout, but by far the bulk of it is new music. Alas, I have no scores, as I wrote this directly in my sequencer. I was fortunate enough to have someone offer to make some album art for the soundtrack; this design is by Bob Akers: Front Cover Back Cover Any comments or criticisms would be much appreciated, particularly as I am currently working on the follow-up score. Thanks!
  3. Hello all. One of my good friends had created this short film, involving a guy getting a lightsaber delivered to him in the mail. He asked me if I could compose a soundtrack for his film, to which I immediately agreed. Now, because this is related to Star Wars in many ways, I felt it was necessary to use some of John Williams' themes and motifs. Even so, this soundtrack has some of my own original music too. So, the film itself and my soundtrack are attached in this post.
  4. To the one of the most influential film composers of all-time, I salute you. You have inspired so many people to become composers. You introduced many of us to leitmotifs in film, and interpolated the melodies of Holst, Strauss, and Wagner in your music. Your 1977 film score is ranked as the Greatest American Film Score ever. http://connect.afi.com/site/DocServer/scores25.pdf?docID=222 You have inspired me to become the composer I am today! Happy Birthday John Williams!
