  1. This is a piece of music I wrote based on an excerpt of William Wordsworths "The prelude-boat stealing" https://www.poetrybyheart.org.uk/poems/the-prelude/ Using themes and melodic and harmonic suggestions of nature and pride that at least, make sense to me. Please let me know what you think.
  2. Hey folks, This is my latest composition, Ruth. It will be performed by my church's orchestra sometime in the Spring or Summer. I am looking for feedback on this so hit me with anything you've got! I know each section is pretty short, but it's what I had to do in order to fit the type of concert it will be performed at. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c3YJdnU_Lg
  3. A local chamber orchestra was accepting scores from local composers, so I decided to write a piece vaguely related to some local folklore. It was fun! It's also in a loose sonata form. I don't usually bother writing in textbook forms like this, but my vague inspiration for the piece fit nicely into sonata form (the two themes relate to two different aspects of the lake--the mystery of the monster legend and the beauty of its surroundings). Following a prescribed form also allowed me to finish the piece quickly, and still allowed a good deal of creative freedom. Even though it's only for 14 instruments (1.1.1.1/1.1.1.0/1/harp/string quintet), I found I was able to get a lot more colour out of this group than out of a full wind ensemble in another recent piece... those strings are just so darn versatile. I'm generally happy with the orchestration in this one. But there are still some transitions near the end that bother me a little. Do they bother you? UPDATED Dec. 24 -- fixed some repetitive/boring sections and smoothed over a transition or two. Anyway, hope you enjoy it! https://issuu.com/nicholasryankelly/docs/watermarked_thelegendofokanaganlake
  4. So for the audio file I am attaching the YouTube video because I still can not get the MIDI to work right on Finale (it sounds like garbage when I try to save the MIDI file) so I am using the WAV file in the YouTube video (sounds way better). Unfortunately, the score is a little hard to see in the video so I recommend using the attached PDF for viewing and the video only for listening. Thanks for your comments!
  5. Here is a one-movement piece for piano and orchestra. In the instrumentation, I added my favorite instrument which is used for the counter-melody, the euphonium. There are two melodic ideas in this composition, the fanfare theme and the "lady Toya" motif. I hope you'll enjoy. Musically Yours, Chad "Sir Wick" Hughes
  6. Hey friends, Looking for any good books or documents/pages (pdf's, etc.) that might talk a little about writing tone poem or program music. Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of composition books, but I'm just looking for some insight specifically on those mid-range pieces of music (too short to be a symphony, too long to be a "pop hit"). Elements, style, things to consider, inspiration. All or any of those topics. Thanks for any feedback.
