Embedding YouTube vids...

Recommended Posts

Yo!

Just a thought...

I've seen, on other forums, the ability to post YouTube videos. Not just the link to them, but to have that little youtube player thing-a-ma-bobber right in your post.

Um...thoughts? I think it'd be cool, but perhaps it's be difficult to implement? Would it suck bandwidth? Would it suck in general? Might it slow down the site? I dunno....just figgerd it'd be neat! Perhaps not enough want/need for it...but I'm all about the YouTubey-goodness.

Like this...

The staff will have a think about it. Unfortunately, due to the way YouTube handles embedded versions of its videos, users wanting to include a video using custom BBCode would probably have to identify it via the video's ID, not the full URL (e.g.

SjFdy624Msk

). I can imagine that confusing some people...but it's a nice idea nonetheless. :)

Also, allowing raw HTML is not an option I'm afraid.

I've just added a YouTube tag, usage of which is demonstrated in a recent posting of mine. :musicwhistle:

It works like this:

[noparse]

video caption here

[/noparse]

video code is the bit at the end of the YouTube URL, so if you're wanting to share [noparse]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjFdy624Msk, you would use youtube=SjFdy624Msk[/noparse]. The caption is anything you desire it to be. :)

But will it not risk lagging YC up? I mean for some people it can take some time to load a youtube clip. It would be disastrous for them who have not all to good connection. If there is a clip that is 10 min long, it would certainly take ages to upload, 10 min to watch and a few more to comment. I am not implying that one should not spend minimum time here, just that maybe the clip is not of interest and that would give an incredibly annoying feeling.

I wouldn't think there would be any slowdowns since the data is being transferred through YouTube's servers. However, since videos will be an internal function within YC, YouTube linking will most likely be prohibited, in order to encourage people to upload their videos on YC's servers instead.

No I think you misunderstood me. Before you click on the thread, how is the person to know?

Of course when it is not playing, I do not know how much bandwidth it takes.

Another thing is, with this youtube preference no enabled it makes the shoutbox a bit wacky; I guess it is just something one has to get used to.

If it's a personal video we're talking about then yes, perhaps it would make sense to encourage use of an in-house system, but not for other random bits and pieces which people happen to want to share...that just strikes me as clunky.

I'm confused - why would you need to know there's a YouTube video embedded in a thread before you've even viewed it?

And what do you mean, it makes the shoutbox "a bit wacky"?

First off. What you admins have now done is to directly allow us members to play the youtube clip instead of having to go to the youtube website and see it. This meaning that the video is, obviously played directly via YC. So, there is a youtube clip embedded in one of the posts, it would probably take a few moments longer. It is no problem for me, since I have a 100mbit cable, but for those with modem or a slightly better connection can encounter problems.

Basically, if a member, with a bad internet connection, chooses to view a thread with one or multiple youtube clips it would probably take more than just a few seconds. It could turn out a bit like a myspace account with too many various clips, making it slow to upload.

And now about the shoutbox. Since there will no longer be a link but instead a window of the youtube clip, which cannot be viewed directly through the shoutbox, will take space and could turn into a lot of scrolling. It is fine with the odd youtube clip now and then but that is not reality now is it. There would probably be several clips during a conversation. This gives somewhat of a shattered discussion, easily missing a shout etc.

There is practically no overhead associated with simply displaying an as yet un-loaded YouTube clip on a page. The bandwidth only starts to pile up when you actually download it.

I've just prevented the tag being used in the shoutbox, which should address that problem.

Just as a by the way, if anyone does happen to use the tag excessively, we can always deal with them on an individual basis.

I had an idea. You know those little icons you can put in front of the thread title? Is it possible to tag some little icons on the thread title either before or after (placing them after the thread title sounds better to me) that shows what it contains? Maybe we could have a MIDI icon, MUS icon, SIB icon, PDF icon, YOUTUBE icon, and any other necessary ones so that the people who like to know what's in a thread before they click it would be happy.

The thread author could add whatever icons apply to the thread, so as many as three or more could show up. They would be rather small, mind you, just like the little icons in the box when someone attaches a file to a post. I think it would be pretty cool, but I don't know how 'necessary' it really is.

Thoughts?
