Suggestion for Posting Compositions

Recommended Posts

I think that for the sake of good organization, everyone should only be alloted one thread in which to post his or her pieces. In effect this will alleviate the matter of posts competing for page one as will invariably happen when more and more members join up. Also, it'll save one the trouble of "accidentally" posting multiple threads, which is quite an eyesore. The main problem to overcome with this is the enforcement, particurarly with new members who probably skip all the rules and post their pieces all over the place.

I would suggest a "test" thread in an unobtrusive area of the forum for people to figure out how to post their attachments, which would help prevent multiple posting.

As for organization... one thing that would help is to make sure "writer's block" actually goes into the "writer's block" forum. Should be easy enough for mods to move stuff there. Of today's 8 new threads, 4 are repeat attempts to post the same thing (solvable by test thread) and 2 are cases of writer's block.

I'm not really sure where the mods have been lately, but this disorderly organization is partly my fault, since I have not really said anything to the mods about what they should be doing yet. I probably will appoint new mods to help out if they desire...I'd like to track down all of the older YC members soon.

I've noticed this large amount of repetitive thread being made in the Critique place, but as a not even one-day-old Mod I'm not about to start moving things around and whatnot. I think something we should do is give a nice PM to the people who make various threads to combine them, and then a Mod can delete the unneccesary posts.

Another suggestion is to have a "Moderators Only" Forum where you moderators can post threads about how to imporve, what's going on, who's doing what etc. and only you guys can see it. That would eliminate some "Member" traffic into what you guys are doing, and would be a more organized fashion of sorting out the beginning speed bumps so to say.

Indeed, and we already have one of these.

Having never been a member of any forum but this one - and until the changeover this one did not have moderators - I did not realise there would be a whole lot of organisational stuff to do as a moderator. Nor did any of us anticipate that this new forum would take off as it has.

I suppose I will personally have to be more vigilant about such things as are being mentioned here, but this forum is as different from the old one as night is from day, and during this changeover period, I've been more concerned with getting a feel for this place than anything else. It hasn't felt comfortable to me to start deleting things and moving stuff around. This place is growing exponentially every day, and frankly it has been all I could do just to keep up with new posts, stay active and be a visible presence. There are also other things I've been dealing with as a mod that were unexpected, like the odd psychopath who, as unpleasantly as possible, reports every undotted i and uncrossed t in the content.

I'm not saying I don't want to do what a mod is supposed to do, but I do want to get a better feel for this before I start making decisions about categorisation of people's posts and the like. If others of you are more comfortable with that in a fluid environment, go for it, and I'll be along with that aspect of moderation when the structure of this place settles a bit more.
