Collaborative Opera Project?

a) I also get that error message.

b) I disagree on the whole "audition" thing. I think anyone from this site should be able to join at any time. Just because we showed an interest first doesn't mean that we can't use the help of whatever composers come along and see that this idea is actually taking off.

BUT, we can't have a large group, Dan. Too many people is what makes this kind of stuff fail. If another group wants to write another opera, that's not a problem. eh?

Well, I think we have different concepts of how this project is supposed to work overall - my idea was that it would be something where anyone could contribute. I think just working with a small group of people, each of which were responsible for a large chunk of the opera would be too similar to just writing an opera on one's own, just more frustrating. This should be a totally different kind of composition experience, where anyone can come and lay down some music, and it's an open forum for everyone.

Ok.. but that doesn't make it a real opera, the problem (even with having two composers) is keeping the style generally the same. It won't sound like music... it will sound like 50 different composers trying to write phrases after one another. Which, hell, it would work beautifully if it were a short work. Just as an experiment. But, I thought our goal was to create a coherent, singable, playable, performance ready opera to SHOW the world what the most gifted minds in the young composing world are doing.

If I am wrong, that is not a problem. We can do it your way. I'll just take my notice off and invite people to join and ask them to PM me to add them to the list.

I don't use Sibelius, but I have a demo (two, actually), so I'll direct you in accordance with how that demo is laid out. In Sibelius 5 (it's the same in Sibelius 6, too), go to File->Export->Audio... and you should be able to take it from there.

Hi, thanks so much. Going away to practice scales now! (Piano) Will try it a bit later. :) Thanks anyway. :)

I originally voiced my desire to be one of the composers in this project. Seeing as I haven't been nearly vocal enough to be remembered(while waiting for something to do), I can offer services as a librettist. I do still very much want to be a part of this project. Judges, what say you....

Morivou, you can add me to the list of librettists. I won't do a lot of "librettoing," but I'll help out once those in charge of our libretto are tired (or, if they don't get tired, I'll join in with the libretto anyway later on ).

Could the portrait maid be a really sarcastic personality? I just have a vision of him having created this portrait to wait on him hand-in-foot only to find that once alive, she's sort of lazy, but only to a degree where, because she's his creation, she still does what he says, but is very snappy and sarcastic about it. I imagine him being completely befuddled at how his own creation can backtalk him. Just an idea..

I think it'd be nice to have some comic relief for the scenes in his house. Just to lighten things up a bit.

By the way, I cannot open the music files. I'm not even sure how I would listen to xml. Can i download something somewhere?

Oingo...I wish to help with the libretto, but I'm unfamiliar with how to format a document in that style. I know what libretto's look like, and I know how to operate my word processor, but it'd be nice if you could give me a quick run down sometime of how you set yours up. My other thought was to write it out plain enough, and then give it to you to retype/edit/reformat as you see fit, but I thought that'd be more work for you than if I just figured out how to format it myself.

Just letting you guys know - I haven't stopped working on this project!! I've just gotten REALLY busy all of sudden. In a week or so things will slow down for me again and I can continue writing. But please, other people write!! We'll get this damn thing rolling along eventually!

Alright. In the spirit of this, I'll post what I have done so far for the first aria. I have to admit it's pretty wimpy; I haven't added lyrics, accompaniment (which is unfortunate because the accompaniment is what will make or break this aria), or much detail, but it's all I've done so far. I'm going to band camp :( all day every day next week, so I won't have time to work on it for a while. Please add lyrics (I haven't figured out how to do that yet; I'll have to read my Finale manual), detail, and accompaniment while I'm gone and tear it apart if you wish. I'm sorry, I would do that myself (minus the tearing apart), but I'm going to be gone for a week, and I think it'll be good to have some new input for me to be excited about when I get back.

The first two measures display the basic idea I'm expanding upon in this aria: a perfect fifth up from the tonic and a minor third down from the submediant (you'll know what I mean when you look at the score).

There's also some modulation with C# (the note, not the key); again, take a look at the score.

Link here.

PLEASE edit and talk.

Can you post a melody/Piano score of this? I will hash out a quick and dry accompaniment and then somebody can orchestrate it! Sound good? Somebody else can write lyrics.

And, I have Finale, so please just the .mus file will be fine... unless you have 2010, in which case give the .xml file. :)

The link to the MusicXML is up there, and a link to the Finale 2009 file is here.
