How many at once?

How many pieces do you work on at any given time? Do you spread yourself out with a lot of works or stick mainly to just one?

As for myself, generally I "work" on one project at a time, but when I'm inspired by something or "hear (in my head)" a new melody that doesn't fit the piece, I write it down and put it away until later. That seems to be the best method for me.

What about you? :)

Definitely several at a time for me. Right now I have a piece for theremin and piano, a sonata for tuba, three piano pieces, and who knows what else that I can't think of right now. Most of the stuff I write I don't finish... so I periodically go back and add a few measures to one of a bajillion unfinished pieces when I'm tired of working on something else.

I tend to start on a piece and work at it full steam, only to suddenly get inspiration for another piece. It's usually either that or I run into some sort of difficulty and decide to switch to something else before I wear myself out. Hence, I always have more projects in the pipeline than I can work on at once. I would estimate that for every piece of music I finish, I'll have spawned another ten or so incomplete pieces to work on when the mood strikes me.

Only ever one piece at a time, but I always have very detailed plans of future works in my head, and much of my time is spent in that stage of planning. I currently have big plans for about 4 big works, but severly doubt that any of them will ever get past the first 20 bars :(.

If I had better incentive than "I will feel good when I'm done composing this" I probably would finish faster.

I wish that were true lol

It can work against you I find. Because when you feel pressured to write something the creativity dries up real quick.

Which normally means I end up just writing crap to get stuff done. lol

I remember when I finished last semester (I'm studying composition) and had finally got rid of all my compositions which were due, I suddenly felt like writing music... Which I hadn't for the last 3 months.

i wonder how beethoven and mozart coped? they didn't even have finale...

No, but they could Audiate and had phenomenal ears. Ergo, their brain was pre-installed with the finale software.

lol
