Pieces everyone else likes but you

I'm a violinist and I dislike heavily most violin concertos. I cannot stand overexaggerated virtuosity..it's just bland and uninteresting.

Mahler and Bruckner can be just as bland, uninteresting and 'overexaggerated', to make use of your pleonasm.

all shonberg ones they suck so badly im probly not getting them thoooo

Well, I'd hardly say those qualify as pieces that "Everyone likes but you" since I'd say more of this forum actually hates Schoenberg than likes him. Try to avoid phrases like "suck so badly" though. I find a good portion of Schoenberg kind of boring personally but they certainly don't "suck".

But on a similar note, I find that I appreciate almost no Webern whatspever. I've tried many, many times to listen to his work but it just doesn't appeal to me. It ends up just sounding like random notes to me. Now, by no means am I claiming 'lulz dis music iz random!!!!!". I'm just saying that it comes off that way to me. The only thing I've sort of liked by Webern is his six (five?) pieces for orchestra and his Passacaglia. Also, I don't have any bias against serial music. I like some Schoenberg and adore Berg but Webern just doesn't do it for me.

Really? All of it?

Why do people insist on making moronic statements like that!?

Yes, really

There has not yet been ONE piece of pop music that I like. I believe that it does not have the substance required in a good piece of music, and I do not appreciate being called moronic for believing this.

If you are similarly lacking in substance, unable to think of a way in which pop music is at the same intellectual level as a good piece of classical music (or to make some valid point in response to my post), then I would request you stay quiet, rather than resort to insults.

For my part, let it me known that if I would consider anyone to be lacking in intellegence, it would be those who consider pop music as being equal to, or superior to, classical music.

Nirvana69,

Throughout my time at high school, I had to contend with arguments on the merits of pop music all the time, and many attempts by people to show me some non-mainstream pop music that they thought I may like. I have also previously read through the thread you linked to in your post.

Despite all this, I still do not like pop music.

I have my reasons for this, and they are robust. I see you are in no mood for debate on the issue (and nor am I), so I do not wish to elaborate.

However, I still do have respect for the views of those who like both pop music and classical music. I would appreciate it if likewise you could have respect for my views in disliking pop music. Upon posting that I have a dislike for pop music, I have received two responses. The first called me "moronic", the second (yours), a "n00b".

Perhaps if you wish to be persuasive on the matter of pop music, or at least foster respect for it, it would help if you did more than just spout out insults.

I called you a "n00b" because you have 45 posts on this forum not because of your feelings on pop music.

And I wasn't trying to undermine your opinion. I merely posted that link since it does contain several member's arguments on why pop music is as "valid" as art music (Robin's included). If no one seems willing to engage you on this, it's because we already have expended quite a bit of energy on this addressing this opinion.

If you really have heard a great deal of pop music (and more than just artist's and songs that are played on the radio) then I respect your opinion. But it's hard to believe you've done so when you're resorting to such broad generalizations as "I hate ALL pop music".

Relax, kid. I'll never begrudge anyone their right to an opinion. I just happen to think your opinion is stupid.

Anyone who's arrogant enough to dismiss an entire genre of music as inferior is obviously suffering from a disease known as "Pompous-elitist-itis". Not uncommon in the classical world.

You're obviously an intelligent young man...but you're naive and ignorant. There's a HUGE difference between "I don't like it" and "it is inferior" (your apparent position) . All I want is for people to acknowledge this distinction before making such sweeping and condescending statements. Don't try and tell me what's "Better".

Please don't make me get into this again. :whistling:

For my part, let it me known that if I would consider anyone to be lacking in intellegence [sic], it would be those who consider pop music as being equal to, or superior to, classical music.

That's nice. :)

Not true, Robin, it's called "Inherent-superiority-of-whatever-the-hell-I-like-itis".

Fans of pop, rock, rave bla bla bla etc. often completely refuse to listen to classical (or other genres, notably jazz, country) without even a good justification. It's a cultural insularism ... and ignorance.

Certainly it's more common than elitist classical listeners.

I have to agree on this, metalheads are NOTORIOUS elitists. They wont touch anything not-metal with a ten-feet pole. :P

Small specification: The first response, you received for making a statement which you can't truthfully say unless you have heard all pop music that has ever been created. Saying "all the pop music I've heard so far" would appear much more reasonable.

The second response you received for bringing up terms like "substance" and "intellectual level" as a pseudo-rational explanation for your personal taste. Nobody can criticise you for not liking a certain music (one that you -have- heard, mind you, not a musical category that contains huge amounts of music you've never heard). But as soon as you give a seemingly objective or rational explanation of your taste, it becomes criticisable and possibly offensive, so you can't expect it to be treated as a mere expression of personal taste anymore.

Robin and Gardener (among others) are right, as usual. (I used to be pretty biased against popular music myself in my younger days.)

That's nice. :)

I love how you included that [sic] in there. It really emphasizes the irony involved.

In any case, I don't see why anybody thinks all "popular music" (I hate that term) is intellectually inferior to classical music. Some of that stuff is very complex - if not necessarily musically, then the lyrics.

The Beatles have always irritated me, and I swear that any time I even hint at disliking them, people start to get all "OMGWTF?! BUT THEY'RE THE BEATLES! HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT LIKE THIS?"

On a side note, I'm not terribly fond of Beethoven's 7th, with a very big exception for the second movement.

Deary me. Parts of this thread have descended into veritable matches of the proverbial slanging.

I find that there aren't any pieces of music that I hate.

Sure there are works that I dislike, but this is just personal preference.

Equally, there are some composers whom I dislike, but I can usually find a work in their output which speaks to me.

^Open minded to classical I agree. But how many metalheads are down to listen to some Dr. Dre or NWA-era gangster rap?

Not many, and that's fine. But I must admit, from my time in the metal community, most of the metalheads I knew were very elitist.

Which extends to myself, obviously :P

~Christian

I feel fairly confident that Anthrax liked Public Enemy.

Anyway, I highly suggest that people who know nothing of metal stop talking about metalheads like they have the faintest idea about them.

Seconded.

Metalheads (and most people in general) should probably follow the same advice about classical music listeners though. :whistling:
