oboeducky
Here's a little article on LOL WUT before we begin: LOL WUT - Encyclopedia Dramatica Now it's up to you to suggest the most bizarre, random, stupid, and/or unexpected moment in music. Have fun :]
Plutokat
4chan memes NOOO!!! as far as music though... dont know if I know anything that I would concider bizzarre in my mind... but then again... I find the Bizzarre instresting. The only thing that comes close to LOL WUT for me is my schools LOL WUT Concert (and yes it is titled LOL WUT and all the signs have the pear on them) in where we play musical pranks and chance music all around campus. Dan Gilbert
A lot of violin encores where the performer starts plucking a melody while simultaneously bowing the accompaniment make me say "lol wut?"
Old Composer
I'm sure at least a few people go "Lolwut" during a performance of Cage's "4'33''"

Ah yes. My favorite example is Paganini's Nel Cor Pi
Daniel
Mozart's Eine Musikalischer Spass. Especially the sublime violin cadenza in the slow 3rd movement, and the final cadence of the 4th movement. :) Also lol-worthy is the epic fail of a fugato that keeps trying so hard to assert itself, but can't get beyond a couple of bars of counterpoint. (4th mvmt) lol wut ..? Edit: Even the minuet is hilarious. Everything is so stupid with it.......stupid horn writing, bad phrases, overly pompous gestures. I love this movement. Check out where the horns end up in the wrong key.. sounds pretty bitonal for a few bars. Also notice how hugely much the trio dwarfs the minuet itself. :P

It was actually part of the final, to name three musical "jokes" in the minuet of that movement. The horn writing is hilarious - the part with them playing in the wrong key is classic. J. Lee Graham
The horn writing is hilarious - the part with them playing in the wrong key is classic. I'm with Daniel and Jamie on this. I played this in the 80s in a baroque orchestra using period instruments, and the way that out-of-tune section in the Minuet was accomplished in the period was by putting an F# crook (ostensibly by mistake, but very much on purpose) in the 2nd natural horn instead of an F crook. The player may be playing the right notes, but with the wrong crook in, they sound so wonderfully wrong.

I was going to mention crooks, but I only know the details vaguely; you've said it much better than I could've. Something about it is just delicious. Especially when the two horns crunch together into a 2nd. There are so many jokes in that piece....and some of them need good playing to bring out....some very subtle jibes.

mahler
I'm sure at least a few people go "Lolwut" during a performance of Cage's "4'33''" Cage`s "4'33''" seriously has to be one of the most brilliant pieces ever made(the passion, the movement!!), and so is "I AM ANGRY" by Nils Erik M
pedalpoint
Elliot Carter's works in general are a big fat LOL WUT to me. I haven't listened to his early style, but I was assaulted with the rest of his music for about two weeks straight during the Carter festival my school was putting on in conjuction with the neighboring school. It was enough to scare me away completely.
Guest QcCowboy
So, basically, what we can understand form this thread, is that a whole bunch of people react "LOLWUT" to anything they don't like? Yes, this thread truly demonstrates the high degree of musical evolution of the YC membership. You know what makes me go LOLWUT? Guess. robinjessome
...react "LOLWUT" to anything they don't like? Just for the record, I LOL WUT'd at Scarlet Johansson's record for the sheer absurdity of her putting out an album of Tom Waits covers - before I heard it, and so hadn't decided whether I liked it or not. I was actually repulsed and offended when I actually listened to it... ;) :whistling:
Old Composer
And I imagine that a lot of people would go "lulwut" at a performance where the performer plays absolutely no notes. A person without knowledge of the intent of the piece and the possibilities of hearing the world around you would probably react that way. maianess
You mean besides all of those choral concerts where half the choir just decides to stop watching the conductor, and ends up a beat ahead of everyone else? My pick would have to be mvt. 1 of The Only Piece Ever Written for Violin and Tuba, by PDQ Bach. <
