DAI
My favourite is Henri Dutilleux :) With Einojuhani Rautavaara being a close second favourite. :)
Peregrination
Hands down, Nico Muhly! Steve Reich and Nico Muhly are why I write music!
Tokkemon
I am my favorite living composer!
wholyguacamole
John Zorn for sure
Gardener
Tristan Murail! He's even good compared to non-living composers ;) Well, to be fair, being dead is a serious handicap. Most people are better at what they do while they still live!
Old Composer
I enjoy David Maslanka quite a bit. Askell Masson writes some really nifty stuff. I have the advantage of being percussionist in that most of ht emusic I play is by living composers.
cygnusdei
What's you favourite living composer? Something's not right with this sentence.
blackballoons
Jennifer Higdon for sure. Derek Bermel and Tan Dun come pretty close. Mmm...John Adams and Steve Reich come pretty close too.
tenor10
John Adams, Eric Whitacre, John Corigliano are all pretty much tied for first :)
blackballoons
Oh I forgot Whitacre! Ahhhh he's freaking awesome. John Corigliano is awesome too. It's a shame his new symphony sucked though.
Qmwne235
Meh, I can't think of many. Many of my favorite composers are recently deceased.
Mathieux
mine is Philip Glass. it took me a month to really appreciate his music (expecially his CD glassworks) but now that I figured him out, and his music out, it's REALLY cool to listen to. robinjessome
*d'uh* Carla Bley. --------------------------------------- John Zorn for sure  [Dude, your first and only post...you're running at a 100% success rate...keep it up]
Ravels Radical Rivalry
Robert Aldridge, Eric Whitacre, Ennio Morricone, and Howard Shore.
James H.
David Maslanka seems pretty darned cool. I played horn in one of his symphonies for wind ensemble - it was a really tight group and the piece was AWESOME. Whitacre's cool, but his music doesn't have much variety in it. I keep forgetting Glass is still around - I like some of his music, but same thing, not always a ton of variety. I don't think I've heard Corigliano. :hmmm: I also like some of Micheal Daugherty's stuff. and DAVID GILLINGHAM. I played No Shadow of Turning... absolutely BEAUTIFUL piece. You can see most of my favourites are band composers. Edit: Yeah, Howard Shore, too, though I don't know a lot about him. nonconformist12tone
John Adams, Philip Glass, Eric Whitacre, Frank Ticheli, Arvo Part, to a lesser extent, Daniel Bernard Roumain. I've heard good things about Higdon - I really need to check her music out. I seem to remember hearing her Blue Cathedral on the radio and being quite moved. blackballoons
Frank Ticheli is amazing; the only wind ensemble composer I'll listen to. Did I mention Derek Bermel? And yes, again, Higdon is supreme.
nikolas
didn't read through the thread really. Just wanted to see if Nuy001 has posted! :D Come on mate! As for my favourite composer who is still alive that would be... Ligeti. Whoops dead! Messiaen... Dead again Schnittke... Dead... Damnit! Michel (QcC) would be an honest choice! His music is wonderful and very well crafted, plus he's a great person! :)
mgrafe@indiana.edu
John Corigliano is awesome too. It's a shame his new symphony sucked though. Really? Seriously? Why, because the brilliant and innovative colors he uses just happen to be clangorous and dissonant instead of nice and pretty and unchallenging?
blackballoons
Nah it's not that. If that were the case I'd hate his first symphony too, which was actually incredibly amazing. His Circus Maximus was a little toooo overthetop what with the marching and the constant interruptions. A bit spastic, even for Corigliano. And I don't have anything against dissonance. Clangy dissonance. I thought you saw the piece I wrote in this forum just about a week or two ago...? Don't be antagonizing me, sir... Nyu001
didn't read through the thread really. Just wanted to see if Nuy001 has posted! :D Come on mate! LOL! To be honest, I really came to mention you! Like I have done in another forums. I guess I am doing you promotion. ;) Anyway, I love your music. :P
