Lessons with PhantomOftheOpera

I like what you did, I can see where you are going, all except cymbals, they now sound kind of distorted... its the compressor...

Anyway, I know I should add a lot of stuff, but the problem is I don't really like this thing, and its a problem to be creative when working on something you don't like. But I will try to upload as much as I can of other stuff I'm doing, so we can discuss all the different things and aspects of different songs.

I have a question, have you got the Edirol Orchestral plug in? I got it recently, so I'm curious what would you think of it. It's kind of an mini-orchestral library. Has some pretty neat sounds if you ask me (some really bad ones too).

Another thing I wanted to ask you about is computer sound cards. What is your experience with them, and how much different sound cards influence the sound you hear?

Well I can hear the differences between most of the sampling rates, I even recognize certain mp3-s like 128, 256 and 320, I think I can pretty much spit it out straight away.

Yeah those last two hits were really bad to start with, no wonder you didn't do any better. It was just a poor rhythmic development there...

There is a track in the Incidental section of this forum that I did with the Edirol library:

I will upload some more stuff soon. And yeah I'm totally up for continuing with fruity loops lessons. I will try to do the little experiment you mentioned, with different sampling rates, and make some notes of what I heard to be different.

Ah, yes I see what you mean by having the impression that violin should have the leading role. But the thing is that I wanted it to be violin - alto flute counterpoint. (which I worked very hard to write by the way :)) and I did not want any of the instruments to be imposed over another, I wanted them to have an equal roll. And another problem is that Alto Flute cannot go down another octave there since it is out of its range. I guess I could have used a bassoon or maybe a horn, but I really liked it the way it sounded with the flute.

I have to say this: Did you f*cking see the speed of those guys? They are doing some shredding... on acoustic guitars??? :O OMG that is sick... thats all I can think about at the moment... I mean... I watched Di Meola on electric, but this is totally sick... anyway, yeah its a good song :)

And yes we can continue on with the synthesizers, I've been looking forward to this part. :)

Ah, and yes, can I please get some feedback on this: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/nights-wonder-20282.html#post299018

track that I did last night?

Having all of your instruments playing equally strong parts is just the right thing in this track and this shows me that you clearly understand the language you speak in this forest track. It works great that way.

The only instrument that cathces more of my attention than the other instruments is the violin and I guess it

Yeah, I understand what you mean about my current track. The dynamics really bother me too. But the thing is that the vst I used is an external instrument, and slides won't work there. Another thing is that the overall volume of the samples is pretty low to start with, so to get it even with some of the more HQ samples I have I must start out with pretty high dynamics, which leaves very little room for dynamic playing. One way I suppose I could do it, is too lower all of the other instruments considerably then max out just the strings in the mixer, but that kind of limits my workflow since I don't hear whats happening with the other stuff well.

I've tried something on my own with the 3osc synth, made some noise, tried around different settings, but I can say that I only have a most basic understanding of it, I just mostly use the presets.

Looks like we did come far, I noticed that our thread is the largest among the current lesson threads. Who would think... :)

Wow, you did a lot more than you needed to do. I guess you got the idea of the first one pretty accurately, but the way I did this was much simpler. Try to turn off all of the envelopes for volume, cut, res and pitch and only keep the LFO setting for the pitch. The only two knobs I used was the Amount of the LFO and the Attack, nothing else.

The second one was also a lot easier than you guessed. The result was not that far away, but a lot of unnecessary work has been done there, too.

Mind if I explain a little closer how the second one works? It

Ahhh righty.. . I'll give it a shot again :) I like the song... what exactly is The Flashbulb? I'm guessing a project of some hyper-famous dude... It's really cool, kind of smooth jazz with electronics, really neat.

I have one question tho', it seems that with synthesizing you can make a same kind of sound trough different methods... or am I wrong?

Other than that, I'm all ready to go on.

Not really, you explained everything pretty well. I will just play with this a little and see what can I come up with.

I had the opportunity to try out Native Instruments Massive, in my opinion it is a sick synth. Too bad that most of it's preset sounds take up to 60% of cpu, which is really not good for working in FL :) Just thought I should mention it, maybe you'd like to check it out.

Well there is one thing... its in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuR36TWIIbE&feature=related

piece, I posted this earlier. There is a synth lead I really like its on 4:10, i could never quite get the flavor of it right. And there is a thing at the beggining its like a scratcher thing, panned left and right. It starts at 0:58.

I would really like to make those.
