Jazz Combo Competition

I'm in need of a piece for my jazz combo and I thought to myself, why not make a competition out of it! So, here I am, and let us have this the competion of jazz.

I need a piece written for

one trumpet,

one trombone,

a bass (electric or string),

piano, and

drum set.

I'd prefer jazz, although my bass player keeps begging me to do a piece in the style of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so if that's what tickles your fancy, go ahead and write it.

I will be the sole judge for this competition.

Both the head and changes must be included.

There's not much else I can tell you for stipulations, because I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for. Any kind of jazz is acceptable (bebop, cool, smooth, hard bop, etc)

Winner(s) will be acknowledged and will (hopefully) get a recording of my combo performing the piece. Since I am in need of material, I may choose anywhere from one to ten winners for this competition, so WRITE WRITE WRITE

Deadline: May 30th

If you enter before the deadline and I like your piece, odds are I will deem you one of many winners as soon as I get it.

Anyone else? This is a great way to get your jazz writing skills up and an almost guaranteed performance of your piece. Even if what you write is "crap," I'll help you out and give you some suggestions from the jazzical side.

Oh and Ferkungamabooboo, I would use your Schoenberg jazz, but it's a bit far out there for me. I understand that you wrote it in the style of Schoenberg, but I'm sure you understand it's not exactly a pice that people are gonna go to a concert to hear. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. If you'd like to write a piece with a more melodic head, that be great =D

hmm i might take a swing at it (swing get it..?)

anyways, whats the level of reading of your players, and would they rather listen to it than read it?

(because i dont have finale yet, and i write soo slow)

p.s.

i do have band in a box, but i dont know how to arrange it for anything else besides melody and chords?

for the arrangement, who will pay for the copyright permission?

I'd rather having you guys write original works to avoid this, but if you decide that you want to go this route, it is up to YOU THE COMPOSER to work out copyright issues. I'd prefer not having to worry about whether you're breaking copyright laws, so if you do do an arrangement, I'll assume that either you have gotten permission or that the piece is public domain. I'm not going to chase anyone down about this kind of stuff.

You need at least some sort of score. You can download finale for free from their website.

The trumpet part can be as bebop as you want it, but be careful on how difficult you make the trombone part. We dont mind fast stuff, but keep that part playable. Maybe write a part that's usually harmonies that have positions close enough together that they're possible for a high school student.

yo jimmy, what you say about this? is it worth playing?

The-J - Post paste blues - SoundCloud

i havent got a bridge for this, but i could write that too.

p.s.

i dont have trumpet & bone sounds, so the basson is actually trumpet and the clarinet is the bone.

Dude this is a pretty sweet head. I'd prefer a bridge, perhaps a little more melodic. Actually it kind of reminds me of charles mingus's fables of faubus. Listen to it and listen to the bridge. that addition would make for a great piece.

How about..... this!:Noteflight - Cannibal Animal I

cool stuff. It's a little bit "off feeling," which i like. kind of reminds me of ornette coleman's stuff (in a good way). I'll see what i can do with it.

remember everyone, I'll tell you at the end of this if i'll use it or not, or work out a compromies, but the recordings won't be done until this summer, so please be patient with that.

Why don't you give this a try. I originally wrote it for a combo with alto and tenor saxes, guitar, piano, bass, and drums, so I edited it a little. The drum part is a little, umm, sparsely written, but if I'm sure he'll get what to do when he hears the bass lines.
