Game music competition

Together with a skilled programmer I am working on a new puzzle game. It is designed to be very competitive and it will enable online versus matches too, but the development of this game has just begun some days ago. I cannot tell when this game will be available, but the development will surely take some more time.

During this state of development I decided to collect works from other artists as well. Here are some facts about the feeling of this game:

Mostly, this game was inspired by Tetris Attack, but this one will be less colorful and might look rather futuristic. Also, this will be a 2D game, so there is no need for orchestral sound quality - Midi would do, but I don't want the music to sound cheap in any way. It would be apt, if the music is relatively fast, since the gameplay will also be fast paced.

Keep in mind that I will do the quality checks and I also want to maintain a solid standard with not too much difference concerning the style of the music. There is only me who will decide whether to include the music you submit or not, but I will give you some tracks as an inspiration of what I am vaguely looking for:

Inspiration:

I'd like to have a style not too far away from Jun Ishikawa's works. You can easily find some of his music on youtube. Also the videos of the post two below this one are more accurately what I prefer.

Here you can find a list of tracks from Hirokazu Ando, also very similar to Jun Ishikawa: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/album/Kirby+64+Original+Soundtrack/665872

Another very good example for typical 2D game music is this: http://www.miniclip.com/games/fat-cat/de/

There are only two tracks within this game, but I think they're a perfect example for 'game music'

I'd also like to include some tracks for the menu and online battle room. Here's the music style you can adapt:

http://www.lastfm.de/music/Johnny+Fawkes/_/Ah%2C+My+Hovercraft!?autostart

I'd suggest not to submit any music, if you expect or even insist that your music will be featured. For the tracks that make it past my quality checks, the name of the track as well as the artist's name will be featured in the game and if your music amazes me, you have a good chance to take part in the development for my next game. Every track that made it into the game will be featured within this post and you will also be able to listen to my own tracks soon.

How to:

Attach your upload to your post within this thread or provide a link to your submission. You can also send me an email, if you don't want other to listen.

Make your tracks loopable.

Don't forget to add the BPM.

Please upload mp3. Midi sound banks can sound very different depending on the player, but you are not discouraged to use midi sounds. The sound quality does not need to be brilliant, but I also do not want cheap and boring sounds.

If you are (still) not discouraged, give it a try.

When do you want the music? If there's enough time, I might write a track or two.

Btw, your links say forbidden when I click them. Here are some alternates.

Halfmoon starts at 2:13.

I've searched for the Kirby 64 OST and I couldn't find a song by the name of fruit drop mini. Perhaps you'll know what to look for if I send you the link.

Best of luck!

The development process will surely take more than 1 month from now on, rather 2 months, so you have plenty of time.

And right, the links I provided don't work - I will replace them now!

The links you provided are nice, especially the last one. Referring to that link, the fruit drop mini is called Taking Battle. I also liked the Battle Among friends, basically all of the faster ones are pretty cool.

Thank you for the links!

Hey Tuskle,

I'm a wee bit confused as to how we'll submit the piece.

I'd suggest not to submit any music, if you expect or even insist that your music will be featured

How do you want us to send you our tracks? By email or can we post it here like BDW-musician did?

In the event that we can submit here, I've attached an unmixed version of my piece.

As the title states, think Mexican Kirby

Mexican Kirby.mp3.

NB: Tempo is 150 bpm

Enjoy and tell me what you think!

P.S. nice job, BDW-musician

well, I wrote this just now for an introduction screen. it's called "indestructible". i've attached two versions. one's an mp3 recording of my soundcard's interpretation of the midi, one is softsynth.

Also if you have a Credits screen in the game an area where your name is displayed as well as the developers and music, one of these might work.

tempo - 135

Hi,

I'm currently listening to your submissions.

You can upload your tracks any way you want. Attachments are fine, same with email or external upload servers. Just one more thing I forgot to mention: Please tell me the BPM of your tracks or write them next to the track's title.

Thank you

How did you get yours to sound so good?? omg.. those are really fast notes, what is the grouping? It's so awesome...

Thanks, BDW! I used the program Logic and they have some really good default sounds. As for the grouping, usually 16th notes with a couple of 32nds thrown in for good measure :P

Doovongeman, the mexican kirby track is great. Puts my imagination into a desert-like scenery and I really like that. The thing that bothers me though is that the mid part really reminds me of one of the original kirby tracks - I don't know which one. Anyway, the samples are great, almost excellent for the game and the style is great, too.

It's too early to decide which tracks to include, but I might design a background theme that suits this mexican style.

Until then I'd be glad to hear more ;]

Glad you liked it, Tuskle. Nothing says variety in level design like a mexican theme!

The thing that bothers me though is that the mid part really reminds me of one of the original kirby tracks - I don't know which one.

It's bothersome that the middle part sounds like Kirby? I thought it would be a plus to have some Kirby inspiration. :phones:

Until then I'd be glad to hear more ;]

I'll see what I can cook up. ;)

Yes, it is a plus, certainly. But at first, I thought that you have simply copied a melody or chord progression of one of the original kirby tracks, but I might be wrong since I couldn't really find a similar track among the original ones.

BDW-Musician, I thought that one of them might be a good idea for a menu or a game over theme - still, it's too early to make such decisions. At this time, I'm collecting different tracks while I come up with ideas for different looks of the game's interior.

Here's my piece. It took my six hours of work, but that's not too bad considering how it turned out. Here you go.

150 bpm.

EDIT: And here's an updated version, without reverb.
