Hey all!

You don't have too much time for July 1st, so I have to write something about the deadline because I don't want to have problems with timezones..

So if you send me the piece and the score on 1st July (in your timezone) it will be okay for me. So I will tell you the result and review all the pieces (together) here some days after 1st July :)

Good luck all! :) I'm waiting for your emails or PMs!

Gollam -

I doubt I'd be able to do this but I have another string quartet piece I am working - a one movement piece. Would you accept a second submission to the one I have already given you here in this forum?

Maybe I misunderstood you. everybody can send one piece for this competition. If you can, please send the link or the files by an e-mail --> gollam12@gmail.com

I don't know if you sent me anything, because the e-mail addresses and the YC nicknames are not the same :) so please send me an e-mail.

Ok, guys :) I received your pieces.

You have less than a week to the deadline. I'm going to travel tomorrow for almost a week, so I will be at home on July 1st. I won't be able to write to the forum in every hours, but I will do my best. If you have questions, you can ask by e-mail --> gollam12@gmail.com

good luck!

Hello all!

I promised, that I will write a review about all the pieces you've sent to me. And I think it's also time to tell you, who won my competition. So here you are.

1st prize - Jonah Rapino - Hardcortet

I really like this style. I feel some Apocalyptica-Metallica in some melodies. We'd really like to play this piece, because we think it would be very good to play.

However a string quartet has 3 different parts, usually. Your piece is very dualistic or I don't know how to say - so you have 2 parts almost always.

Thank you for sending this piece. Please send the parts if you have them - and if you want us to play it.

2nd prize - Charles Ivan Punchantz - String Quartet

I think you are such a great composer, so you don't need me to review. I really like your pieces. And if you want (and allow), we'd like to try this piece too.

3rd prizes

Caleb Ontiveros - Trance for String Quartet

I really like the main idea. However I'd do something with the dynamics too in the 'breath' part.

The score is a bit messy. I'm really interested how to play this piece. Send the parts if you want.

Mauricio Arias - Dynamo

This piece is very interesting. I don't really understand the title.

I LOVE part G (the allegro moderato) Please send me the parts.

--------

I would like to have some comments on the other pieces too.

Actually, I was a bit sad. I was waiting for a great piece from you. The capriccio movement is very nice, but I don't really like the other movements of your string quartet. I heard much better pieces from you before.

Jaap Cramer

I can see in your piece, that you don't really like modern music, or just don't know how to write something like that. But I can see that you know how to write for string quartet. And that's a great point. If you want, I would really like to play this piece with my string quartet. Please send the parts!

Eliot Burk (Last Life)

movement 1-3

You wanted to write some polyrhytmic thing. The main idea is not bad. The problem is the repetition. The repetitive music is NOT monotonic music. You really misunderstood this. You have to learn more about this type of music.

movement 4

actually I like this muvement. The C in the bass is getting boring I think, but maybe it's good, because therefore I can conduct (I am the cellist in the string quartet). I like the return of the main theme in the end.

If you want, we can play the 4th movement.

J. Kiracofe

I like the beginning of the 3rd movement. But you are similar to Eliot Burk, I think you misunderstood the repetitive music. In the first movement you repeated those two measures 12 times! I don't understand the reason for it.

And our latecomer: Thea Blob

You didn't send me the full score. How should I see the piece itself? :)

Actually, I really like the cover.

If you have questions, you can ask here or e-mail or PM or something. :)

Thank you all! It was very exciting.

And a question: I'd like to make and other competition but for string trio. Are you interested in it?

No misunderstanding, I just like it when music is a little boring sometimes, don't have to worry about paying attention constantly. Gives me room to think. Not always of course.

I would be really happy if you played any part/movement of the piece! If you want to change it at all, maybe take out some repeats, re-write any parts, I would be completely okay doing this. I could also write a compressed version of the first three movements (without any repeats), so that the return at the end of 4th movement is still a return. If you're willing to play my piece, I'm completely willing to accommodate you.

Also, it would be cool if the people who won, or you, could post their pieces here? I would really like to hear them, in any case, however that happens.

They should do that. I don't have the right to upload other's pieces :)

Ah Gollam -

Sorry to disappoint. IT sounds more the string quartet may not have been to your taste as you weren't clear on why you didn't like the piece or why you liked the Capriccio. It was my first string quartet so maybe my lack of experience with the medium may show. It may be too the harmonic style is a bit too conservative and the form a little to sectional at times compared to some of my work, I don't know.

Anyway, below is the one movement piece I completed for string quartet. I'd love to hear your opinion of my recent one movement piece for string quartet - just don't expect a ton of bartok pizzes, portamento, col legno or Lachenmann's extended techniques. It is pretty vanilla in that area.

(sorry chopin, I just cannot post anything now, the site won't let me)
