Finale 2009 - Kontakt - EWQLSO Gold - Dynamics?

EWQLSO is a professional sound library and is not meant to be used from within a notation program like Finale. Finale is intended to produce sheet music, not realistic audio recordings, so its MIDI editing capabilities simply will not give you the level of control you need to make any sort of proper use of EWQLSO.

If you want to use EWQLSO to its fullest potential, you should do so from a MIDI sequencer such as Reaper, or Logic, or Cubase, or Sonar, or any of the others that suits your workflow. Using EWQLSO from within Finale and getting playback to sound correct will require a lot of hidden system messages and generally makes for an excessively messy score and way more work than necessary. So if you have your symphony completed and nicely scored in Finale, then leave it at that and do your MIDI sequencing/audio production with EWQL in a proper piece of software dedicated to the task.

huh? you mean to say the putting dynamics messages such as "piano" "forte" wouldn't change the volume?

Yes, but it's already solved. In the HP preferences are some dynamic options, that helped a lot.

Marius, thank you for your help. Are there any free or cheap sequencers available?

Reaper is free for about 30 days, then after that it's extremely cheap (compared to the standard price of DAWs). It's not perfect, but it might be just the thing to start on.

Be sure to read the manual carefully! :-)

So, is it OK to still do all the notation in Finale, then upload the midi to Reaper for dynamics? Or should I notate the piece in Finale, and then copy it note by note to Reaper?

By all means notate in Finale — that's what it's for after all — and then once you export the MIDI from there, you can pull it into any sequencer you like (including Reaper, yes) and polish up the actual sequencing and audio end of it using your sound libraries. That way you have both a clean score for printing and a nice audio rendering for listening.

Regarding your second question, I don't see why you'd ever want to re-transcribe a piece note by note from Finale to Reaper — just import the MIDI and go from there. The alternative is if you're using a MIDI keyboard and you feel like you can get more realism in the sequence in less time by literally performing each part of the score into Reaper. Saves you some boring time tweaking MIDI values since the performances will naturally have that human element from you playing them in, but if you don't use a MIDI keyboard for entry (or play keyboard period) then that option is moot.
