Modern String Trio Competition!

Hello again, everybody!

One of the violinists in our string quartet is very busy nowadays, so we will have a lot of rehearsals together with a string trio.

So, that's the exercise, you have to write a modern string trio for us. (for violin, viola and cello).

The Rules:

- Your piece's length should to be at least 3 and maximum 15 minutes!

- Your piece should be atonal, or tonal but in a modern way!

- You have to use at least 3 extended techniques in your piece. Use your fantasy! (We know about 37 extended techniques, if you find a new one, thats a very good point.)

- It should be a complete piece. (Not only 2 movements of 3)

- Write a short introduction or preface to your piece. We would like to know, what you think, what your ideas were.

- We need the score (not only the parts!) in .pdf (send it to: gollam12@gmail.com with the subject 'modern string trio competition'). If you can't write it in, you can send your hand-wrote score too in images.

- If you can, send a recording (for example MIDI).

Important pieces of information about us:

- You can be wild, but we love to play very softly too. So we like ppppp and fffff too.

- We love microtones, new music- and rhythm-systems, aleatoric music too.

- The viola player would be happy, if you don't write above C6 (two lines above treble clef staff), because his viola is not able to product nice sounds above that note. Flagolet is okay.

- The violinist is a girl. ;)

And the most important thing, the prize:

Performance, and if we can(!), we will make a recording of it. And of course the glory on YC will be yours, maybe that's the biggest prize. :)

DEADLINE: October 1st, 2010.

For any other information: PM, or write an email, or ask here.

Please, if you decided to give it a try, let me know.

Good luck, everybody! :)

I see no rule about using an already written piece and its current enough and fits the "modern" well I think so I thought what the hey.

Your piece is accepted, I got the e-mail. I had to make a new folder for the new competition in 24 hours after the main post! That's a new record :)

I'm working on something but what kind of emotion do you want, like a dark piece or more bright?

  • 3 weeks later...

Well.. The competition is closed. I think I wasn't so successful with this comp. :)

The only entry is the piece titled 'tók'. I wouldn't say, that you won the competition :) but I would like to leave some comments:

So I don't know if you knew about it, but I'm from Hungary, as Bartók was. :) Do you really know some Hungarian folk songs? You should, because you have good ideas. If you know Hungarian folk music more, you can use Bartók's technique more better, and that would be good. This fast pizz. part in the 2nd movement... I don't know how "dare" you write something like this :D respect, anyway; but I don't know how will we be able to play this part of your piece.

If you want us to try, please send the parts. Was this piece ever performed? (It would be nice, if your Bartók inspired piece was performed by a Hungarian string trio :D)

Thank you,

Marcell Magyari

I have a couple of string trio pieces posted on the forum. I didn't submit any of them because I didn't feel they fit the requirements you set forward (i.e. they didn't use any extended techniques!) If you would like more entries, however, I can submit those... but you probably wont choose any of them since they don't fit what your looking for.

(I also really couldn't come up with a piece that used any extended techniques - I generally don't write many of those as I feel today the use of extended techniques on string instruments is common enough to be almost passe.)

One group is working on the piece right now to perform but it has not yet been performed and I would love for it to be performed in Hungary. I am very familiar with Bartok's music and the music really isn't intended to really replicate Bartok's but I am very influenced by him.

I can send you the parts tomorrow. I am out of town for the weekend!

I know that the second movement has some...ahem..challenging moments, but I thought they would be a fun challenge for the players to figure out. It is possible though!

I hope to hear you play it!

I know you write good things, so if you want us to try your piece, please send the string trio what you like the most :) with parts and score of course. --> gollam12@gmail.com
