Concert Band Competition

Hi Everyone! I have been spending quite a bit of time looking over music under the forums here and was hoping to find a great concert band piece for my band to perform. I did host a competition back in 2009, but this time I am going to give the composer freedom to create what they would like. I am going to give you a list of approximately how many players and instruments we have BUT you can have other parts in your score (for example bassoon), but just keep in mind what we have to work with.

I would like to have a few judges. Please let me know if you are interested in participating in anyway.

Unfortunately, I can not guarantee a performance since I am not the conductor, but I have made recommendations and purchased music that we have performed. Depending on my financial situation, I would like to give a monetary prize to the winner. I am also contemplating allowing others to contribute to the winner's commission, but I'm not sure what would be appropriate to do. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on the subject because I feel composers should get paid for their work.

I will go ahead and commit to $20.00 prize money for first place and a free CD of my compositions for ALL participates including the judges. I know it's not much, but that is all I can promise at this time. (Hopefully it will go up. If anyone would like to contribute to some form of prize whether that be money, item, or a sight reading session let me know.)

Here are some suggested guidelines:

Length: 2-6 minutes

Difficulty: Grade 3-4 ; Intermediate

Instrumentation:

(Number of players that we have is in parentheses.)

Flute in C/Piccolo (3-5)

Oboe (1)

Bassoon (None)

Clarinet in B flat (4-8)

Bass Clarinet (1)

Alto Saxophone (2)

Tenor Saxophone (None)

Baritone Saxophone (None)

Trumpet in B flat/Cornet (5-7)

Euphonium/Baritone TB (Both treble and bass clefs please) (2-3 players)

French Horn (1-2)

Trombone (4)

Tuba (2)

Percussion (2) - Some of the instruments available are:

  • Bells/Xylophone
  • Timpani
  • Cymbals
  • Bell Tree
  • Snare Drum
  • Bass Drum
  • Wind Chimes
  • Triangle

Deadline: March 1, 2011.

Please let me know if you plan to enter or have ideas or suggestions for the competition! Thank you and good luck!!

THIS NOTE IS FOR ALL JUDGES AND CONTESTANTS TO READ!!!!

If you want to be considered for 1st prize it needs to be turned in tonight (3/5/11) at the latest. I might accept it on Sunday as long as it is in my account before I start printing everything out.

I will accept submissions next week, but 5 points will be deducted for each day. This will be a 100 point system.

I have decided it is vitally important to give the judges time for consideration. Please be advice the winners will not be selected/notified until sometime after April 1, 2011. Updates will be posted to this forum. Please submit all questions here unless they are personal or about your score specifically.

I know many of you are very anxious to have your scores looked at right away, but I have to take one score at a time, and preferance will be given to those who submitted their scores first. I am almost finished with the basic overall critique of the cleaniest of the first score. This is a VERY detailed process cause I HATE competitions that give you no feedback or marks on the score. I have seen both well done professional and not so well done professional competitions done.

Each entry will literally receive a large package with marked up scores in hand writing as well as a professional written and signed critique. I may even put in a letter of recommendation, special prizes, and more. Believe me...your wait will be worth the wait unless you would rather and quick decision with no feedback, and it sounds like everyone I have messaged wants something so I have going to do that, and I'm putting my own money and time out for you, so I expect you to give me the time I need. winking.gif

Thank you for you patience. smileyanti.gif

Oh! I need all contestants and judges mailing addresses! It can be a P.O. Please private message or e-mail them to johnprestondennis@yahoo.com. Do not post them on this forum. If I do not receive your mailing address, then you will not get your scores or prizes. (There would be no way for me to get them to you.)

I will be sending out individual thank you notes with more instruction if I don't get all the addresses. If you are not going to submit your score for consideration then please let me know so I can remove your name off of the list.

Also, because I consider this my first professionally run competition I want to first send you a physical thank you letter with my signature to confirm I recieved your score.

Deadline: I can extend this if needed, but my first thought is to give 2 months. I'm not looking so much for a real extensive or complicated score. So let's say February 1, 2011?

If you want a theme or some material to get you started let me know.

Please let me know if you plan to enter or have ideas or suggestions for the competition! Thank you and good luck!!

I'm not entirely sure if I should give out theme material. To be honest I don't really have anything to show you other than maybe some orchestral pieces that I would really like turned into concert band pieces.

Do you have finale 2008 or later?

Thanks for signing up! Does the February 1st deadline work for you?

That would work!

I'd just want some inspiration just so I can now what you're looking for.

The majority of my work consists of lyrical, expressive pieces for intermediate ensembles!

I hope that works!

and yes I have finale 2010!

my email address is mlew03@aol.com

I would like to judge pretty pretty please!!!

Maestro! Welcome on board. Just so you know...there will be a small time frame for completing the judging after the February deadline. Maybe about a week for you to voice...so just to let you know.

I want to compete in this competition

Great! Wouldn't you like a little more time to tweek and improve your piece? You have until February...

Welcome! Once again, that is great that you have something finish, but you can take the advantage of this extra time to tweek and improve your score.

I've been working on a piece for maybe the last month or so, although I came up with two or three of the themes (and some basic orchestration) before then. Would it be alright if I enter that piece after I complete it?

Also, you say grade 3-4. So like 8 or 9-year-olds? My piece may be a little too advanced for that (my reason for writing it was to have it played by my wind orchestra, which is made up of mostly high-school musicians)...

*Thinks for a moment*

Oh...right...concert music is scored with grades...I just remembered that I have an old flute score from Harry Potter graded 2-3...

I shouldn't have anything much harder than that music in my piece, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, as long as you're OK with the fact that I started writing it before this competition started, I'm in. I should be able to finish it in about two weeks.

Hey Inkweaver...that is fine. I will put you down, but make sure that you read the rules from top to bottom. If your piece is for orchestra, then it will not be a good entry. We are a concert band (winds and percussion only...no strings.)

Our players consist of primary adults so it can be advanced. Grade 3 is kind of the middle grade. Grade 6 is the hardest in concert band literature.

Thanks!

So, how is your piece coming along?

It's going very well. Today I'm planning on drafting the last third of the piece, and after that, it's just going to be fine-tuning (beautifying the score, checking harmonies, etc.). I'm hoping to show the score to my band director this Thursday, and then have it sight read next Thursday by the band.

My band has a few instruments yours doesn't (bassoon, baritone sax, double-bass), so I'll have to do a bit of tweaking for the version I'll submit to this competition. That may take two or three weeks due to school starting up, but I should easily have it ready in time for the deadline.

Is it alright if I post it to YC for feedback before submitting it?

Good!

And yes, feel free to post it on YC. I can also look over it, too.
