Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto In D, Opus 35

My symphony has a large violin solo ala Scheherazade although it wasn't necessarily an inspiration ( Stravinsky's Sleeping Princess [orchestra suite]) and Danse Macabre have that honor.

Ironically as I was listening to Tchaik 4th, I realized I had his Violin Concerto in D, Op 35. This is a masterpiece!!! Anyone who wants to write for violin, please, check out this work!!!!

Tchaikovsky's concert has long been a favorite of mine. I can really trace my interest in serious composition to my falling in love with this piece's first movement at age 12. Alongside his own 1812 Overture and Beethoven's 5th Symphony, this concert served as my introduction to the so-called "Classical" world - as well as assuring a lifelong, ever-growing love for Tchaikovsky's masterworks.

Ever since I heard Roslavets's Violin Concerto No.1, I can't imagine anything much better. Just my opinion though. You should check that out too if you are wonder what it's like to push the boundaries of violin music and tonality.

It's an amazing concerto, and maybe somewhat underrated. I consider Beethoven's to be the finest in the whole repertoire, but Tchaikovsky's gets my vote as the greatest violin concerto written thereafter (Mendelssohn's is also very good). I have a harder time deciding among earlier ones, because Bach's and Mozart's are quite consistent in quality (well, Mozart's latter three, anyway).

I can't believe someone, much less a composer, could bring themselves to call it, "meh."
