June Monthly Competition! (Romantic Style)

It's going to be so much fun rewriting my romantic piece with a brand new melody because Tokke and the others couldn't take it.

Lots of fun...

If it makes you feel any better, some of us spent time second-guessing ourselves and trying to figure out how to harmonize it properly to see if we were actually missing something. And I'm sure Aniolel spent more time than any of us stressing and trying to come up with something....

Anyway, if you managed to write so much yesterday, Herr Mozart, you can always finish it off later and post it as a separate piece or rework it into the new one. :P

Yeah, I thought of all of that just after I posted. Guess I was just a bit frustrated (and tired). Sorry!

I've decided to enter after all. I already started a piece, and I'll see if I can insert the motif in the development or something. Otherwise, I'll start a new one. The spots are filling up fast, so I want to grab one before it's too late. One question, can we change the key of the motif to fit the piece?

This question has a really simple answer: Yes! I am not final authority on this question though.

Note: This does mean orchestration applies here and everyone will be looking at how the theme is orchestrated in the composition: usage and development of the theme. Especially since you are going to tell us how you "used" the material to create a scene in music.

Heck, now I am confused. I'm waiting for a new musical idea to be posted at midnight. This is the only musical idea I must feature in my work, disregarding any other one posted earlier. Am I right or wrong? (If I am wrong, please show me THE legitimate required idea).

The only theme that will be required for the competition will be posted at midnight: when the competition actually starts. .That is when you can use the theme. I take it the one I sent and posted here did not make the cut.

Ok! Here it is. Live with it.

It's not the best melody ever, but that's the challenge with it. It's shape is slightly ambiguous, and will require clever usage to make it unique. The chords are mostly predetermined, but don't feel limited by that. Romantics had a way of using melodies with unconventional harmonies below it, adding and subtracting and doubling weird notes at will. The melody comes with built in ornaments like chromatic leading tones and syncopation. What I tried to do was cover a large ground and make something that could be interpretable.

I could see this melody being VERY romantically slow, or I could also see this as an Allegro movement with nice, fast syncopation. If you plan on doing a slower movement, feel free to add ornamentation and "grand" the melody up a bit. As long as the notes and rhythms are "basically" in tact, then we will accept your interpretation of the melody.

Again, don't feel BARRED to the key. I wrote it in C because I was trying to be quick and I was trying to be "fair". Somehow C is a more "fair" key... But, you can use it in any range or key. I mean, I don't really even like it in C. It might be too bright for a slow movement.

OH and the most important thing: If you want to write a MINOR version of the melody to use, you MAY DO SO! All I ask is that you write the FULL melody out in a minor mode or how you think it should be presented as a minor melody, and clear it with me through PM. Sounds like a lot of extra work, but if you want it, you gotta work for it. ;) Sorry.

Thank you for your patience, and MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR.

Yes. But, keep in mind the integrity of the melody. Like, there are rhythmic motifs embedded in the melody (as you've sure noticed), and if you alter them too much, you might make a different melody all together. So, just be careful that you don't change too much.
