Correct (Or Even Just Non-Ridiculous) Playback Of Glissandi In Sibelius?

Recommended Posts

I feel like I must be missing something. How can modern notation software still be so useless at accurate, sensible playback of glisses?

Is there any setting I can adjust in Sib 6 or Sib 7 (I have both installed -- bought the 7 upgrade but am still primarily working in 6) to make the playback less comical?

Thank you.

Because they are notation software. Their goal is professional engraving, not professional and realistic performance. As a side note, not only glissandi are a particular weak spot; performance of grace notes is also very poor.

Not that I know of. As far as I know, you have three options for configuration of glissandi (early, late and linear) - I do not remember if there is some slider too. Maybe there is some plugin out there, or some midi commands that you can enter manually to override the default playback settings. Try the Sibelius help forum for some workarounds; but I guess you need to wire Sibelius to some third party audio processor or DAW or whatever it is called. Or just have the music performed.

Thank you.

You are welcome.

Sibelius' limitations of glisses come hand in hand with the limitations of MIDI and there isn't a good way around it for playback unless you do some ridiculous workarounds with hidden voices and extra parts etc. Often its not important enough, for me, to go to all that effort for one gliss.
