The 2012 Young Composers Awards! (Planning Thread)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

We will be having the 2012 YC Awards as planned! :D If you don't know what this is, exactly, then pay attention.

Basically, once a year, we gather up all the best pieces on the site (based on categories that you nominate pieces in as members), and then we vote on them. Basically, it's nothing more than a waste of time but a great one because the hard working members of the site get some kind of recognition! I've won YC awards in the past, and I am sure you will one day too (took me 6 years to win one).

THIS IS MY TIMELINE:

November 5th - Put up planning thread and ask for categories. (CLOSES NOVEMBER 20th)

November 30th - Put up nominations thread. People will nominate pieces written (completed and posted on the site) from December 15th, 2011 - December 15th, 2012. No pieces outside of that time frame will be admitted. (CLOSES DECEMBER 15th)

December 20th - Put up voting thread. You will vote. (CLOSES DECEMBER 31st)

December 31st - all voting is frozen and the counting begins.

January 5th - Results are posted! :D

SO, here is what we need from YOU, the members. Decide on the categories YOU'd like to see.

Examples are:

Best piece.

most improved composer.

Most disliked staff member.

ETC.

I would like to see a discussion about what categories to include. I will ask my moderator/admin colleagues to reach back into the archives and pull out old category lists to mirror off of. I'm too lazy to do it! :D BUT, if they don't, I'm sure I will at some point.

Cool? Awesome!

Let's get started.

It'd be nice to have a "versatile composer" category, as a composer who writes in a variety of "styles", I mean, for example: An impressionist sonata, a whole ballet, solo violin pieces in baroque style, classical marchs, fugues in folk themes, electronic music, a secular cantata, etc... This is quite interesting, as many composers stick to a sigle style, with the same "forms". The composer that goes further in many styles, periods, forms, instrumentation... this one would be a strong candidate to this category^^

Wow... I was aware about the competitions and challenges, but didn't really know about the annual awards :) ! Sounds like an Oscar-like choice  ...

So are we meant to suggest categories?

My suggestion for a category: worst composition ever.

Does this mean that we can vote not only for the best but also for the worst?

(I'm sorry for these laughable questions, but I'm really new enough not to be fully aware of how does this work)

:) I am God, so what I say goes.

Someone just lost the nomination for most spiritual :D

I sort of like these extra-musical categories. For fun, but not too many. However it is hard to measure, and doubtful what it even means, to be the most religious (said the theologian). But if this is open, I like to nominate Wayne for his alleged believe in Russell's Teapot (this is against tea-party-people, for the record)

hahaha. Most politically opinionated member? hahah.

Well, we'll be voting on the nominations anyway. So throw out as many as you want.

And I mean. The Musical Categories are pretty straight forward, yeah? Best piece, in every category imaginable. Basically.

These have been the categories in 2012, 2011 (don't add too much 2010) and 2009 awards...

Top Orchestral

Top Incidental

Top Chamber

Top Band

Top Jazz

Top Rock/Pop

Top Electronic

Top Vocal Choral

Top Keyboard

Most Underrated Piece

Staff's Pet

Thread Categories:

Most Underrated-overlooked thread

Most Controversial thread

Funniest thread

Best Journal

Thread of the year.

Now I think we can add a few ones and perhaps remove one

from the been said I like "Most Versatile composer", "Best Solo" would be within "Top chamber", I say nominations in this can be accepted and if there are no more than 3 works nominated for this then it won't be any "Best Solo".

CJ we do have "Best Reviewer", Serge (Zach) won last year this year might win "Most missed member" and if we open categories in styles it will multiply all categories in too many options and it didn't work before.

"Least obvious alternate account." maybe a catergory like "Most Problematic Member" or "YC's top troublemaker" "YC's Staff nightmare" etc

"worse composition ever" could be but don't complain if one of yours wins.

Most unreasonable member.

Strangest member.

Most religious.

Most spiritual.

Worst Title

and if we remove some to add more if the funny ones, for instance I've never known what's exactly "Most Sexy-grazed" member that was nothing but Saiming/Max winning there and nobody knows why, do we remove this one ?

Maybe remove "Best Journal" since there are very few journals and nobody read them they are usually dead threads and someone come once a year to post something... remove ?

Staff's Pet ? Mitchell won until he disappeared and the same, nobody knows why since he wasn't even staff member.

I'd like polls for all, simple and fast.

"Sexy/Grazed member"... Perhaps should be turned into "Member with the best looks" for a better understanding :P ...

"Staff's Pet" should be someone towards whom the staff shows some kind of favoritism or patience  ...

So I'd be for keeping them :) .

Well, let's see... This would be pretty much what I'd suggest for this year (proposed new categories in red, categories proposed for elimination scratched out, comments in italics):

Composition Categories:

Most Outstanding Composition

Top Orchestral

Top Incidental

Top Chamber

Top Band

Top Jazz

Top Pop/Rock

Top Electronic

Top Vocal/Choral

Top Keyboard

Most Underrated Piece

Worst Title

Thread Categories: (it's somewhat harder to get people to vote on this category, since many people don't even look at the forums, but anyway...)

Most interesting Thread

Most Underrated, overlooked Thread

Funniest Thread

Most Controversial Thread

Oddest Thread

Best Journal

Thread of the Year

Member Categories:

Best Staff Member

Best Moderator

Best Reviewer

Most Disliked Staff Member

Best Composer

Most Versatile Composer (not the same as Best Composer, but rather focused on the ability to compose in diverse styles)

Most Reasonable Member

Least Reasonable Member

Most Tech Savvy

Most Improved Composer

Oddest Member (this is the same as strangest member, right?)...

Most Annoying Member

Most Missed Member

Least Missed Member

Most Sexy-grazed MemberBest Looking / Most Attractive Member (?)

Member who contributed most to the community

Most Skilled Debater

Most Politically Opinionated Member

Most Spiritual Member (not necessarily the same as most religious, right?)

Staff's Pet (or favorite)

Staff's Nightmare (or Top Troublemaker)

I hope we could still have a few more suggestions ;) ... BTW, I would ask for the nomination / voting process to be better publicized (on top of the home page and in larger font size, perhaps), since there's little point on having less than 5 people nominating and 20-25 people voting on the picks when there are more than 60-100 members who are more or less active.
