Organ Composition Competition

Recommended Posts

I play every summers in three concertos in a city called Alcacer do Sal, where exists a XVII century organ, these three concertos are only performed by me and I choose the program completely by myself.

I plays always work of Mozart, Bach and my own works.

The problem within this competition is that the concerto is getting close, but I would love to perform also works from other "contemporary" composers.

I commit myself to play the winner piece, but I may also play others if its pleased me! (And to record at least the winner piece).

Since that I launch this competition:

Final date: 5 July

Time limit of the work: Dont exist but shorter have more probability to be played.

Instrument limitations - Only organ, without pedals (it hasnt...), from the C two octaves downs the central, to the C two octaves upward the central C. I has many registers, bit you can indicate dulce, forte, piano, etc...

My limitations - I'm not a Rubistein for the organ, but I can play all things in the level of the "hard Bach", but if it is too much hard to play, since I dont have much time it decreases a probability of being played.

Style - Yours or other! But I love counterpoint! Good counterpoint!

You can also compete with a yours piece that already exists.

You may also compete with more than one piece.

Best wishes!

Here's my third entry. Till now, it seems that it will be competing against the other two pieces that I submitted (and lowering their chances of winning). However, since I consider this one of my best compositions, I think it would be unfair both to it and to you if I did not enter it in the competition and therefore denied it the chance of being performed and recorded by you.

What kind of site this is, I don't really know. I reported Sarastro for making fun of my 3rd submission by responding to it with "LOL!!!!!" (see above) and no one has removed it yet! Sorry to bring this issue up here in your competition page António Capela, but the fact is that Sarastro has brazenly made fun of my piece on your competition page (to no outrage or even reaction from anyone). And that making fun is negatively biasing all my submissions to your competition. I think that when people are allowed to make fun of or bully someone unrestrained, that colours everyone's perception of the bully-victim. Even I, when I read the odd positive feedback about a piece by me, am now actually having to question whether it is done in mockery (as Sojar once went so low as to even dare to brazenly suggest to me regarding someone's positive feedback) or it is a genuine positive feedback. Surely people like Sojar cannot afford to believe (or even let anyone else entertain the thought of believing) it could be genuine. What they are effectively doing is managing my perception on this site so that unbiased people would have to think twice before daring to like my pieces. And I strongly resent that and consider it a blemish on this otherwise marvellous website. In a way, I am sorry that I can't find another website where there is a composers' community like this one and where I could find a more welcoming and unbiased audience to share my pieces with.

I now give up on you so I will not review your uploads anymore. But since you mentioned my name in your post, I feel obligated to respond.

Honesty, do you really believe your music is good? Apart from a few promising ideas (which I now dare to believe they are purely a coinsidence) you have never proved to have a real gift for melody, harmony, voice-leading, form, instrumentation. Notation is lousy (32nd notes in staccato with pauses instead of 16th notes in staccato without pauses, funny fermatas, lack of articulation and dynamic marks), your pieces barely last a minute. Is this really all you can bring on? I dare you!

Any praise you have received is by members which - I am pretty sure - are at the early stage of their composing career, but when they improve (and they will, believe me), they will start to distance from your pieces as well.

This is exactly what I am complaining of above in my post: you can't determine how someone else will respond. Here you are even going so far as to determine other people's future response to my music. That, I believe, is totally unacceptable. Music is subjective. You simply can't determine or purport to influence another's opinion about your own piece, let alone another's piece. And therefore you are not allowed to try to influence their opinion or cast doubt on its veracity. An opinion about a piece of music is a subjective judgement. Therefore, it cannot be considered to be right or wrong in black-and-white fashion. So you cannot contest others' opinions of my music as mistaken!!!

Extreme subjectivism is a surefire way to go nowhere.

BTW, if my organ piece was to be deemed either unplayable or not idiomatic enough by its eventual performer, I would gladly withdraw it for revision.

I do play organ a bit (although I suck on pedals :p) and the Šmartno organ is a pneumatic one. So all fast notes are late or barely audiable. Your piece would work rather OK at the electric organ.

You're on! I have just composed a Soliloquy and let the others say, who can do it better!

As I'm the judge I cannot enter in any partty, but I must say at least three things:

1- Luderart, dont fear my judgment, it wont be affected in any way by Sarastro, Sojar, yours, or Stravisnky, or even Mozart comments on your pieces. And this is applicable to all the competitors.

2- It is my duty to say that music is not purely subjective, pure subjectivism didnt exist, because you only have relative terms, when you have an absolute one in order to compare the others. Relativism is  wrong, in music it is simply stupid, but in morality dangerous. Please do not confuse taste with quality. Technique with feeling. Mystery with arbitrariness.

3- Sojar, as I said before, it will be for me a honour your participation in this competition, and Mr. Sarastro, if you are here participating in the debate, why not participate also with a piece? Please accept this challenge.

Thank you all, and I'm still always looking for more uploads!
