2014 Summer Competition

Recommended Posts

It looks like I'm too late to be in the competition :(. I'm still going to compose a piece though. Good Luck all!

Nonsense, you must have my spot as per my conditional entry:

Well... I don't know about medieval music, but I guess I'll risk entering for the sake of showing participation. I will try earnestly to learn something of medieval music as quickly as I can so I can enter something worthwhile. BUT if the slots fill up and someone else wants to join, I won't mind giving up my slot for someone else. Especially if they can produce something more appropriate then I. Regardless of whether I get to enter or not, I WILL upload something pertinent to the competition guidelines. Let it not be said that I failed to show my support of this move to revive YC.

Dapontel should be allowed to enter! I know for a fact not all 10 contestants will come through in the end (judging from previous competition history)

I agree with you. I'm going to put him on the competition. Then, only the fist ten uploads will count (unless the judges agree in allowing more than 10 competitors)

Just out of curiosity, why is there a limit of ten participants? Is it only in order to simplify the judges' job?

Yeah. Judges, people generally, only have so much time to do things. Adjudication is a lot of work. But the judges can increase the number of judicable entrants if they want to, or decrease them, depending on what all is viable for them to do, to keep the competition going.

Due to recent and unexpected developments, I have had very little time to devote to this competition in recent weeks and it looks like that isn't going to change for a while. While I still intend to compose something for this competition (I did give my word), it may prove impossible to submit it before the deadline(or even anywhere near it). I'll upload it whenever I do manage to finish it. Who knows? Perhaps I will miraculously be able to finish on time. But consider this a notification of my nearly certain inability to participate in this as intended.

Well, no posts, the competition is over. Is it still worth it to start a new one? The next competition is about chamber music, and I thought of a much easier one. What do you think? If you guys think we should do it, I'll post. It's ready.

Yah! Please! I was waiting to hear some submissions, but I understand writing for orchestra is a daunting task.

Ugh... I felt so bad dropping out (although I'm still working slowly but surely on that piece despite it all being over... I'm stubborn like that) but I know I won't have much time to work on new compositions when I still need to finish so many other projects. I want to say yes because I want to be enthusiastic and ready for a challenge but it would be so much work. Granted a chamber ensemble would be way easier, but I don't know. If you do indeed decide to continue that would be great and I would love to hear all the submissions, but I won't be able to participate.

Hahaha, what a riot.

Perhaps the mistake is in assigning young composers to write for full orchestra, which is just stupid.

Let's go to a middle school shop class and assign them to assemble a functioning space shuttle. Or perhaps we can go to a seminar for aspiring writers and do a competition for composing an epic homer style poem.

I know, we could ask an apprentice mason to construct a full size replica of the great wall of China.

Of course, someone will say "Write whatever you want, the experience will be good!"

That's true, experience is good. But don't you think said mason would be better off spending some time learning everything there is to know about laying a single brick before he takes on the task of laying thousands of them down in a single project?

Because I'll tell you what, that space shuttle, that epic poem, or that colossal brick wall are going to be just about as piss poor quality as can be imagined from people who have no idea how to even properly construct a single element of said constructs.
